Title: What dry food
leanneh - June 29, 2007 02:24 PM (GMT)
Our pup has been raised on BARF and we have tried that but I am really struggling with it (I'm a meat phobic veggie!!) I would like to change him over to a complete dry food but have read that too much protein can make collies 'hyper'. We are hoping to take him to agility classes when he is old enough and will be t aking him on lots of long walks when he is ready but he will not be a 'working' dog. Any suggestions on which would be a good dry food? Our vet recommends Hills Science Plan.

I think vets reccommend that because a lot of them sell it!! That said I have heard it is one of the better foods.
I feed mine CSJ (www.csjk9.com) and they do really well on it. And I would say it is mid range price.
Others will obviously feed different foods. But this has been discussed lots on here before. Every dog suits a different food. All I can say is mine do agilty have CSJ CP21 lamb and rice and have great coats, are really healthy, nice weight and doing well on it.
It's a bit trial and error.

Whatever dried food you feed look at the ingredients! They should be as natural as poss- no colours etc.
Anything that says 'meat by products' or simular steer well clear of.. if you really want to know more have a peek at
http://www.preciouspets.org/truth.htm not for the squeamish!
Go as Natural as possible but dont be fooled- some brands are called things like 'Natures Favorite' but have lots of colours, preservatives and
I think CSJ are good as are Burns, Natures Menu
http://www.naturesmenu.co.uk/We feed ours the Naturesmenu raw meat mixes and chicken wings etc etc all raw.

Have just changed ours to Wainwrights Salmon and Potato and one of them has colitis and this appears, fingers crossed, to be working fine.
We also feed a wet food, naturediet, and chappie to the colitis prone one. Try to keep the protein down as they will make them hyper.
Watch out any treats you give as well, some of them are high in enumbers and additives.
Hope this helps.

I'm another that feeds CSJ. Mine are on CP24 during the agility season, then CP21 during the winter as they arent working as hard then. Both thrive on it and look great.
Mine also have naturesmenu in their kongs in the morning for breakfast.
I have also fed Burns (watch the low oil content) but JC lost loads of weight on it and Kai just hated it. And also Arden Grange which again they did well on but was hard to get hold of.

Mine are on Arden Grange...They were weaned on the Puppy food, moved on to the Junior version (at the time it was Graduate) and eventually, as adults have thrived on the Premium version...Amie puppy seems to be doing well on the Puppy/Junior food as well...
I sometimes give the Gruesomes a spoonful of Nature Diet/Nature's Menu/Wainwrights not because they need it but because I like to treat them sometimes with a different taste that won't harm them...(I also give tuna/sardines/cod in moderation...and the occasional egg(with shell) and this is added to the AG)...
