Title: help!! cholesterol!!

Chel - April 15, 2008 11:54 AM (GMT)
terra has a misty patch in the centre of each eye, when i took her to see the eye specialist he said its fatty deposits from cholesterol, and it could be her food thats at fault. he recommended i try a low oil based food, im wondering if anyone has suggestions, is there an easy to do ( not much time to faff about doing dogs dinner when i dont get time to do our own most nights!) home/ raw type feeding that i could try? the lowest food in oil % i found so far was the jwb wet food, which costs a bomb! he recopmmended to try one that is 2% oil.....??????

help?! louseyputer

we feed nature diet - just been and looked on their website and the fish one is 3% oil and one of the others is 4.5% (lite I think). Not sure if you've already tried this (I remember seeing the boxes in one of your piccies!lol)

We've just bought a breeder pack of the fish one from Berriewoods online and Vince loves it

i have the chicken one at the mo at home, it said 7% and the lamb was about 9 i think??? cant remember exactly, the burns tins had no oil percentage shown on the wet food ( lamb) so not sure about that one

( i hate the smell of fish btw....so it better work!) :P

I know it is the stinkiest one of them all Chel!!! Typically it also seems to be Vince's favourite.

Chel - April 16, 2008 01:11 PM (GMT)
the feeding guide is a bit rubbish on the pack!
off to look at website to see how much for a fat arse bc!
we have got the mixer also, a grand 1.6% oil! :D

how much do you feed vince leanne?

leanneh - April 16, 2008 08:29 PM (GMT)
What mixer did you get Chel?

Vince has 3/4 of a pouch 2 x a day. He has some mixer / cottage cheese / sardines mixed in as well. We did reduce it a bit after he was castrated (on Vet nurses advice) but he started to lose weight so put it back up.

I love it coz you can stuff kongs / bones with it and don't have to worry about feeding too much extra stuff / treats etc

Don't know if you saw the breeder pack on Berriewoods? you get 24 puches for price of 18 - I've only jsut seen them but works out cheaper for us - their service and delivery is fab too (no i'm not on commission!!)

Chel - April 17, 2008 08:18 AM (GMT)
i saw them...but it only applies to a few i thought? the fish didnt show up as one of them on the offer,
no idea what type of mixer it is, just says holistic ( and like i say was only 1.6% oil) but my pet shop is a littleun and they rebag stuff and sell in smaller bags ( if that makes sense!)

Hi

You can't always just go off the typical anaylsis for finding lowest content oil protein etc.

I can;t explain it very well so have done some calculation based on information i could get hold of.

The percent of oil given is out of 100% therefore i would expect that the % of oil etc would break down into grams per 100 grams.

Pedigree chum canned has the following anaysis.

Protein 8.0 %
Oil 5.5 %
Ash 2.0 %
Fibre 0.8 %
Moisture 79.0 %

Therefore i would expect that for every 100 grams fed 5.5 grams would be oil.

The recommended feeding guide for 20kg dog is 2 and 3/4 cans each being 400 grams. Therefore the total oil content per can would be 5.5 X 4 = 22gram.

You should feed 2 3/4 cans therefore total oil fed per day would be 60.5 grams.

Pedigree chum pouches have the following analysis.

Protein 8.0
Oil 6.0
Ash 3.0
Fibre 0.4
Moisture 80.0

In efect every 100 grams fed has 6 grams of oil.

Each pouch contains 300 grams therefore 18 grams of oil.

Recommended feeding for a 20kg dog is 4 pouches.

This equates to 72 grams of oil per day.

Now take a dried food.

This anaysis is from CSJ Lamb and Rice

Protein 22%
Oil 10%
Fibre 2.5 %
Ash 8%

This equates to 10 grams of oil per 100 grams of food.

Recommended feeding for a 20 KG dog is 260 grams per day.

This equates to 26 grams of oil per day.

Although just looking at the anaysis would make Pedigree chum tins look the lowest in oil, it is in fact the CSJ which would be lowest. Moisture contents affect the true protein and oil levels etc.
