Title: border collie colours
Description: what colour is yours

Brenda - April 21, 2008 06:52 AM (GMT)
what colour is your border collie and do you show him/her?

BorderCollieLvr - April 21, 2008 01:43 PM (GMT)
I've got a blue merle, a red tri and 5 black and whites.
Other half also has a red tri.

Want to give showing a go never got round to it though.

What dogs do you have, do you show them?

ginauk84 - April 21, 2008 08:19 PM (GMT)
A white and blue merle rescue so can't show but she's predominantly white is bow legged.

A sable welshie cross collie.

A sable sheltie who I did some showing with and she had a 3rd and 5th I think in the two shows she did as puppy - 6 months - then her one ear stuck up lol.

Then a tri-sable sort of colour crossbreed.

well talking of colours here is a photo of Magic's sire 'NEO' Ellagant Stargate @ Arnpriors he's an EE Red & an import from Australia, this year he came 5th in Limit dog @ Crufts & last yr he won Limit...

I have 3 (2 x BC, 1 x WSD)
Buddy - 13.5 yrs - Black and White BC

Sassy - 5.5 yrs - Red Tri WSD

Rush - 13 months - ee Red BC

I did show Buddy when he was young (in New Zealand) and he did quite well there - both of his parents are NZ Ch so not surprised.

Sassy is WSD so only does agility

Rush was going to be in the show ring but I never quite got organised with Ring Craft. his litter brother has done really well, but is a very different shape

hauntedpaws - April 23, 2008 01:58 PM (GMT)
I'm sorry, but am I the only one that doesn't like ee red? nailbiting
To me they look like big corgi's.....IMHO *hide*

BorderCollieLvr - April 23, 2008 03:46 PM (GMT)
I like some but not others don't think i'd own one though it would end up looking brown!!!
I quite like the ligher red ones but not the darker ones.

madredthing - April 24, 2008 06:36 AM (GMT)
Even though I have an eeRed, I very definitely DON'T like all of the shades / looks they come in ... I deliberately chose Rush on the paleness of his colour and would not have taken his litter brother due to something I couldn't put my finger on about the look in his eyes ... likewise I see something "odd" in Neo's eyes in that picture above.
Rush would have to be the biggest Corgi on the planet!!!!!!

char - April 24, 2008 08:29 AM (GMT)
I like Rush, altho do prefer them a tad darker... but again prefer him to his bro!

Carol - April 24, 2008 09:24 AM (GMT)
Funny - I was thinking the same - don't like Neo's eyes, or the colour very much.

I've got:

Murphy - 12 1/2 yo WSD black & white with speckling (both parents blue merle)
Floss - 9yo tri colour WSD farm bred
Tess - 8yo tri colour short haired WSD farm bred
Mick - 4yo WSD (with full ancestry history) black & white
Bob - 16 mths WSD (again with full ancestry 3/4 of which is pedigree BC) black & white

I tend to go for black & whites & avoid anything that's bred for colour. Obviously none of mine are able to go in the show ring, but they've all had a go at agility to a greater or lesser extent. Floss & Tess also work sheep.

char - April 24, 2008 11:26 AM (GMT)
I've got 2 black and white BCs, very unique, lol!

The first is ISDS reg, and the second is show lines but lines that work(ish). They've both been shown, Tia was more for socialisation (which was fabby) and Rix was because if he was gonna be there, he might as well do something! They both did ok, Rix won a BOB, and Tia won several BOBs, best puppys and also a puppy pastoral group one. Then she chipped a tooth when she took a pole head on and hasn't been shown since!

Claire - April 24, 2008 03:31 PM (GMT)
ok so being completely thick but what on earth is an eeRed. Never heard of it.

Anyway I have:

Kai : Black and white Collie x Springer
JC : Black and White WSD
Wren : Red Tri BC

Not a single one destined for the show ring.

Chel - April 24, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
sorry to those with ee's but to describe it the best i can claire, its like 'bleached' red/choc, both twix and rush on here are paler than neo, but all 3 are ee red, otherwise called australian reds sometimes too, im crap with colour genetics, so i wont atempt to try and explain the proper way!

ginauk84 - April 24, 2008 05:05 PM (GMT)
I agree about Neo I am not so keen on his face, I never really liked ees until I met Twix and Rush who are both stunning, but have never seen any others I like the look of.

I have gone off red and whites as there are so many about and I like them really chocolatey. Merles I am so picky about how they are marked that don't think I could pick one as a pup as you can never be sure what the colour will be like. However I like slate merles or merles with loads of tan

I love my sables but I can't think of any lines I like that would throw a sable. I am really liking my tris and black and whites at the moment.

Debbie - April 24, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
I have 1 black/white smooth coated WSD.
1 black/white (very) rough coated BC (I showed him as a puppy, but then went on to agility).
1 black tri smooth coated BC.
1 blue/white rough coated BC.

I like eereds, blue/whites and slate merles.

char - April 24, 2008 10:08 PM (GMT)
Gina I couldn't imagine you with a black and white, its too normal, hehehe!

I see something "odd" in Neo's eyes in that picture above.

Looks like nobody's home to me.

I suppose I might be expected to like the colour given my track record with ginger dogs, but somehow it's not right in a collie to me - just like all the other fancy colours people are breeding for.
It shouldn't matter what a collie looks like as long as it can do a job.

Lol I would really like a black and white nice long coated with not too big a white blaze with helicopter ears  mum really wants a tri, so we shall see when the time comes (long time yet!).

solomonsmum - April 27, 2008 11:17 AM (GMT)
We just have 2 black and white border collies:

Jake 11 - an unwanted pet who we've had for 9 1/2 years now. Apparently from a working farm but would'nt know a sheep if it bit him!!

Solomon 9 months old who is also from a working farm - got him at 10 weeks old as a soul mate for Jake after Meg had to be pts last year.

No papers for either, both long coated, just a part of the family now.

mandp - April 27, 2008 01:43 PM (GMT)
Well each to their own I guess. Not sure I chose an ee red, Twix was the last one left and I didn't mind the colour. It has grown on me now and of course I think she is really pretty. I'm not as keen on the darker ones like Neo (sorry Deb! but Magic is gorgeous lol).

I think colour is secondry importantce really. The only thing I would try to avoid is merles. They're just not my thing. I think there are maybe 3 or 4 in agility that I really like. Two owned by my mate Toni. I like Jill Spurr's Matisse and Sian Illingworths little girlie.

I am a bit of a fan of red and whites but dark red's.

I am also big on boys looking like boys and girls looking like girls if you know what I mean. And I like traditional markings. Oh and I used to hate black faced dogs but now I have Jag I rather like them too!

Have also had a tri and will have a tri again, when I can bare to.

i have a smooth coated black and white tri. mic who is a wsd and a red tri merle skate who is duel registered. i used to have a classic black and white duel registered boy, ladd but sadly i lost him last year, i did show him and was very sucessful.

skate is a very dark merle, not keen on the lighter ones and i knew his mum was a very dark chocolate and his dad a very dark merle so i hoped he would be dark you never can tell, when in certain places he has been called a blue merle wierdoo

he looks very dark against some merles, and i love him to bits, very fussy with my black and whites everything needs to be very even.

but if it felt right i would have any colour..which is just as well as the next pup i have booked could be any colour..

y xxxx

Annie - April 29, 2008 08:02 AM (GMT)
Rum is 12wks now and he is registered as Black and White although I'm confused as to what is happening with his coat! He has developed a blue undercoat that is becoming more obvious.
We would like to have a bash at showing but his main career hopefully will be agility.
If anyone has any thoughts on his confused colouring please post. Ta

LOU - April 29, 2008 09:29 AM (GMT)
ive got a smooth coated black and white and ive got a mostly white with a tri marking on his face!

i dunno if that has a proper name or not!!

He is a Jakovall both parents are black and white, there is blue in his litter he has a blue sister and a blue tri sister.

It is quite possible that he may change colour as he gets older. You never can tell until they have had a moult what colour they may turn out to be and how long the coat may be.

Here's my chocolate tri boy - Tyto

saphiemoss - April 29, 2008 08:07 PM (GMT)
O goshh... how stunning!!

Carol - April 29, 2008 08:09 PM (GMT)
Oooh, Tyto's lovely - a proper colour! - although I can't see myself ever having a red and white as I've got red hair myself and believe two redheads together wouldn't work. bur2

... but you say he's chocolate, so that's a different matter :D

ginauk84 - April 29, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
I love Tyto not normally that keen on reds but wow! Where is he from?

Brenda - April 30, 2008 06:07 AM (GMT)
Thankyou for liking him. His pedigree name is Wildfell Eagle Owl. I will get another put on later of my previous tri colour so that you can see that it is not just choccy's that I like. Mind you a bar goes down quite nicely with red wine. :D

char - April 30, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
He looks lovely. His grandad woody is my Tia's dad :o)

Brenda - April 30, 2008 09:56 AM (GMT)

Brenda - April 30, 2008 12:31 PM (GMT)
