Title: Any tips for starting a flyball team?
Draven - September 15, 2008 04:45 PM (GMT)
Sadly, we have had to stop going to our old flyball club because of how far away it is and how much the fuel was costing nailbiting
So, I and dad had a think. We could start our own one (Yes, blarblar. but I really want to get my dog back into flyball)
Dad has found some plans online for a flyball box and has had a good look at the boomerang type box so he is going to try and copy one of them to the best of his ability. (Jumps I have found plans to - easy enough they are :3)
Anyway~ What I would like is some advice on starting the team up. It will most probably be a small team, not many flyball nutters around here XD
Advice on running of the team and etc.
To be honest, anything but bashing me for lack of knowledge would be great :D

I bought a book called 'Flyball racing. The dog sport for everyone' by Lonnie Olson
It is an American book but has chapters on building equipment, training ans setting a team up. It was relatively cheap - might be worth a look on Amazon.
Have you googled the flyball association? They might have some tips

I have it somewhere, but don't have time to search for it now. I'll send you the link when I get back from school ^.^
Though it is only a wedge box. Most of it dad is just going to make up, and if it turns out well we can always send you our plans.

The main thing is to decide what your costs are going to be so that you can work out how much you need to charge people so that you have enough to cover your rent when you first start out and then hopefully make some extra when you get more people so that you can put it towards equipment etc. You should also really take out public liability insurance in case someone breaks their leg at training and then decides to sue you! I found the kennel club to be fairly cheap and we cover the cost of that from annual membership fees. It's also a good idea to draw up some rules so that people know what is expected and how things will be run from the start. The Lonnie Olson book that someone else mentioned is very good and will give you lots of ideas. Are you planning on having a competetive BFA team? If you are then at some point you will need to chose a team name and apply to the BFA for registration. If you like I can send you a copy of our team rules and other forms so that you can use/amend them as you want, just pm me if you want them.
