Title: Deaf collie puppy in need of a home
Description: 6 month old white puppy
lisa macdonald - December 18, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
I am currently fostering a 6 month old collie puppy who is deaf.
She is mainly white, with some blue merle patches and blue eyes.
She has a lovely temperament with people and dogs and loves company.
She is a typical lively working type collie, who just loves to be out and about doing things. She is very bright and learns quickly and I think could be great fun for doing agility or obedience as she is so keen to do anything.
Off lead she is great and comes back regularly, never going too far and certainly never out of sight.
If she could hear, I could have homed her many times, but sadly so many people are put off by the deafness, when really it doesn't make her greatly different from a hearing dog ( she just requires a few extra considerations).
If anybody may be willing to give an active, permanent home to her, please get in touch, she desperately needs a home to call her own.
She is vacc, wormed, chipped and flead and will be spayed fairly soon.
I can be contacted on: 07923 438472

the trainer i work for asked me if i had seen her (i have 2 deaf dogs) she sort of went off for a minute saying she would quite like the challange. i asked her if she was interested (i was surprised you see) to which she went noooooooooooooo
i was surprised 'cos she's a belgian shepard person lol
its a shame really because i could really see her with sarah but her perfect home will come along x it always does :)
lisa macdonald - December 21, 2008 06:19 PM (GMT)
I hope she does find a new home soon, although so far as soon as anyone knows she is deaf they lose interest. Its such a shame as she is a great dog and as I'm sure you will know deaf dogs just aren't that hard to train, in fact the lack of being able to hear distractions does seem to have advantages!
Gemma Wickenden - December 21, 2008 07:25 PM (GMT)
oh yeah, i've got one about to compete in agility and another that trains in competitive obedience. she could compete but shes at the stage where she would prefer a soft squidgy bed than a ring :)
her home will come up, i always say theres a perfect home for them out there. you'll find it dont worry x

If I was allowed another dog I would gladly adopt her. I have a collie - Macy who she could easily learn from and I know a great training school as well.
If only I could get hubby to say yes.
I hope she gets a home soon.

Where do you live, I know a few people who have collies that may be interested, I'd love to take her myself but don't think I'd cope with more than one collie.
lisa macdonald - December 24, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
I'm in Warwick. Sh is a great dog, but she does need an active home as she is full of energy!

Hi
Sorry, but you're right as soon as they find out she is deaf they say no, I am really surprised, it shouldn't make that much difference, it wouldn't to me anyway. Hope she finds a good home soon.

Cloud is still looking for a home.
Lee - December 30, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
Good luck on the home-front for Cloud ... her time will come :)
Call me mad but I have just said 'yes' to another little blind collie (and he is B&W) to come here as a foster ...
that will be five disfunctional collies in the house and all under 3 years old yikes
Any pics of this baby?
What's her story do you know where she came from before landing on her paws with you as a fosterer?

Hopefully this will show some pictures of Cloud. She is doing really well and becoming more of a sheepdog day by day.
She came from an breeder, who bred merle to merle and came out with 2 deaf sisters. Fortunately somebody came across them one day, locked in a stable at 5 months as he couldn't sell them and she then came to me.
She was a bit wild when she came, but is far more civilised these days (well by collie standards anyway!). Hopefully the right home will come along soon.
Good luck with the new baby.

She is beautiful
Do you know what happened to the other one?
WarFlyball - January 2, 2009 05:00 PM (GMT)
You're right Lee, she is gorgeous. I've met Cloud a couple of times and she is a lovely girl - full of beans and really friendly. When the right home comes along for her they will have a cracking little dog...

Clouds sister was rehomed to a pet home by the lady who I got her from. Not sure how she is getting on.
Cloud is coming on really well. She is settling more in the house and just loves training.
Everyone that meets her loves her, but as yet there has still been nobody interested in taking her on.
She is growing by the day and her merle patches are becoming darker and spreading and I can't quite decide how long her hair is going to be, still at least she seems to dry clean!

Thought I would add some updated pics of Cloud who is still looking for a home.
To keep her entertained, I have started to do more training with her, she does; sit, down, stay, waits for her food, paw, spin, twist and her heelwork is coming along well. I have also just started retrieves and if I still have her in a couple of months I will start some baby agility.

lisa macdonald - March 20, 2009 10:06 PM (GMT)
Cloud is still with me. Sadly although I have had some enquiries, none have been quite right for her as yet.
Feel free to call me if you want more info.
lisa macdonald - March 26, 2009 07:43 PM (GMT)
Cloud is now about 9 months and is still looking for a home to call her own.
She will be great fun for somebody wanting an active companion as she has bundles of energy.
She has now been with me a while, so I have started doing some more training with her to keep her entertained. She is great to train, she just loves to be doing and throws all her enthusiasm into anything.
Her obedience is coming on well and she has potential for lovely heelwork. I am soon to start some baby agility with her also. I anticipate her taking to it very easily!
I have had lots of people ask about her, but all seem to be of the opinion that having a deaf dog is difficult. I often forget she is deaf and sometimes I am convinced she can hear me, but I guess she is just in tune with my body language.
I've only done basic training with a deaf dog previously, but find training her really only to have occasional differences from training a hearing dog.
If anybody would like to have chat about her, or come and meet her in person, then feel free to call.
She is going to be rehomed via the Dogs Trust Bridgend, so there will be a £75 adoption fee (but with this comes her vaccs, spay, chip, flea and worming up to date, collar+lead and 6wks free insurance).

I am pleased to say that Cloud now has a lovely new home. She has been with her new owners for nearly 3 weeks and has settled in really well.
Its an active home with 2 other collies, lots of long walks and she has already started on obedience and baby agility.
It was hard to say goodbye to her, but you can't keep them all, but its great to know that she is going to be well loved and have the active and stimulating home she deserves.
Thanks to everyone for the messages.
Lisa.
