Title: Ollie Collie really needs

OllieB - December 19, 2008 10:47 PM (GMT)
a new home.

Anyone interested in this dog, please pm me.

A bit about him. . .
He's about 21"tts
Almost a year old
Lives indoors and gets along fine with the other dogs.
He's not that cool about strangers touching him or strange dogs in the vicinity, I'm sure this could be dealt with succesfully with the right handling.
This evening he snapped at my 4 year old son for trying to touch a bone he was chewing.
Son shouldna approached the dog, dog shouldna snapped. . . but there's no place in my home for that. . .
He's fine with my elder girls (8 and 11 respectively).

What I want for him
IF he finds a potential home, it MUST be with someone who is experienced and will absolutely 100% do some of the usual Collie pursuits with him (y'all know the stuff. . . ).

That's about it. . . . please, no chit-chat and contact via pm please waggingd

OllieB - December 20, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
He will accept 'strange' dogs but the intro needs to be undertaken with care. He 'runs' with a gang of 6/7 other dogs and we, occasionally, a stranger comes to play for the day.. normally only a few mons and he's cool.

Some pics from pretty recently..

Jabs are up to date and his recall is pretty darn good. .

Have emailed Valgrays, would rather rehome him than have him destroyed.

mishflynn - December 20, 2008 05:22 PM (GMT)
im sure valgrays will be able to help, gd luck.

norfolkbcs - December 26, 2008 10:52 PM (GMT)
Have you had any luck with this boy yet?

Why would the dog be destroyed?

BorderCollieLvr - December 26, 2008 11:09 PM (GMT)
If he has some behaviour problems i'd definately let a rescue help find him a home so they can offer his new owners support :)

Good luck in finding him a new home.

This collie cannot be P.T.S.

As I collie owner and Professional handler/trainer I would be happy to Foster this dog an try to sort the "Issues" that have been allowed to develop.

Please email me if needed.

Greg.

Surley being PTS is not even being considered, this is a perfectly healthy young BC, and the issues he may have is not his doing, they just need working out.
If you still need help I suggest contacting Sara or Paul at www.wiccaweys.co.uk, they are very experienced with BC's and would able to talk things through regarding the problems he is experiencing

Sorry guys, didn't get email notification of replies and haven't been online. .

I'll try to answer the PTS 'thing' without sounding like an arse, because I'm not.

IF he couldn't be found a suitable home then I would have little option but to PTS. The bottom line is that he has bitten a child and I cannot have a dog that is willing to do that in my home long-term.

However. . . . I firmly believe his issues can be resolved in the right hands and that they are partly (or totally) my 'fault' which is why he wasn't pts immediately.

I do care a care deal for this lad and want the best future for him. I'm sure as I can be that we will find the right place for him and would love to get updates as to how he's doing from time to time since I believe he will do very well.

I'd planned to contact Wiccaweys after this coming weekend and if someone feels they can offer him the right home, please get in touch. . .

Flyball - January 3, 2009 06:55 PM (GMT)
Maybe to help your cause in finding a home for Olli - it might be a nice idea to explain exactlly how your child came to be bitten. Dogs no matter what breed can bite - but NOT without cause.

Did he for instance bite when a toy or treat was taken from him or maybe your child jumped on him unexpectedly
.Now you have said he has bitten, you really should give the circumstances behind it - so the new owner has a good idea what they are taking on here.

Thanks

Rich

OllieB - January 3, 2009 09:56 PM (GMT)
aye, I should. . . actually thought I had but obviously not. .

Ollie was chewing on a bone (in our lounge) and my Son approached him, it's kinda that simple.
I'd previously dealt with similar(ish) situations involving his behaviour when food was around and had, up until this, had it under control.
He still reacted to the other dogs when he had food in his crate but it's his food in his own personal space. . .

Right thanks for that, thats easily solved then - nice simple one .

OllieB - January 13, 2009 08:50 AM (GMT)
Still looking. . .

As flyball kindly pointed out, nice easy 'fix'. . .

Want to add, he's no 'rogue'. . a bit naughty (for want of a better term) but is fundamentally obedient..
Knows. . sit, wait, stop, walk, off, leave, NO!, come (his recall is pretty darn'd good most of the time. . the only real issue is the strange dog thing). For distance recall (and this worked even when he had a gob-full of rabbit) the whistle worked immediately.

Deserves a 'proper' home where he can achieve his potential imo.

Got Valgrays on the case too, haven't contacted Wiccaweys yet, plan to do so this week.

Again, not asking any money however, if a new home is sorted through one of the rescues I will be suggesting a donation to them.

lunarsquishy - January 16, 2009 10:19 PM (GMT)
any news?

OllieB - January 16, 2009 10:42 PM (GMT)
He's still here, not heard from Valgray.

Tried calling Wiccaweys this afternoon, will try again after the weekend.

Really do want an awesome home for Ollie, such a funny young lad. .

Don't want to pass him to a rescue and hope for the best (although, he's such a funky chap I doubt he'd be waiting long) but wouldn't mind one of the dedicated BC places so much.

We go out with a young lurcher and, while the longdog runs (a bit, and I mean ONLY a bit) faster, Ollie runs longer and turns just as well.

Plays in the water too. . not fussed about swimming but loves running in.

Oh.. and he's a catalyst for chaos too. Does't require anything more than his presence and the whole 'pack' go a bit loopy.

Megsmum - January 16, 2009 11:48 PM (GMT)
I really hope you can soon find a new home for him.
He sounds if he has really strong working instincts, plus still being at the typical teenager stage.
Ref Wiccawys, I know they are usually very busy with phone calls, but if you leave a message, they are very good at getting back to you.
Margaret
:)

OllieB - January 16, 2009 11:58 PM (GMT)
Thanks Margaret, I'm one of those people that don't like to leave messages but may have to 'bite the bullet' this time ;)
He came straight from a Shropshire farm, both parents were alleged to have been working dogs.

My trust in him went when he tagged my son otherwise I'd happily work through the problem(s) and see him through to his old age.

Nice dog, REAL nice dog.

lunarsquishy - January 17, 2009 11:00 AM (GMT)

Jacqui23 - January 17, 2009 08:19 PM (GMT)
Would Ollie be suitable for either a single person or couple with out children so he can have time spent on him . I am sure that having this lovely collie pts is a bit ott , there must be someone out there with the experience to help this boy. runningdog

OllieB - January 18, 2009 04:12 PM (GMT)
As long as we can get the transport logistics sorted, Ollie has a new home lined up.

PTS is not something I would do lightly or in haste. But his looks are not a factor in that.
But let's not digress, eh. . .

BorderCollieLvr - January 18, 2009 04:21 PM (GMT)
Where do you need transport to and from? someone on here might be able to help.

OllieB - January 18, 2009 08:30 PM (GMT)
He needs to travel from N.Essex to Orkney. . . quite a trip.

Done an online quote with someone, just to see . . . . and they came back with £899 door to door. . .LOL...

Brontesis - January 18, 2009 08:44 PM (GMT)
You're having a laugh, what they taking him in a gold limo that's ridiculous..

lunarsquishy - January 18, 2009 09:04 PM (GMT)
thats a nutty price nailbiting

OllieB - January 18, 2009 11:15 PM (GMT)
Gotta say, I did have a chuckle about it. . .

Waiting for someone else to come back with a price too. . .

I wasn't too keen on 'relaying' him but, spoke to my dog buddy today (at length) about it and she reckons he'd be cool about it so I'm happy to go that route if necessary ;)

Really hoping that, between the people working on it, we can sort it soon. I'm honestly in no rush to 'lose' him (far from it) but do want him settled. .

BorderCollieLvr - January 18, 2009 11:42 PM (GMT)
We'd do it if you covered petrol would cost quite a bit if you get stuck let me know :)

OllieB - January 20, 2009 03:56 PM (GMT)
If I could afford to pay for him to get to his new home, believe me, I would.

lunarsquishy - January 20, 2009 05:04 PM (GMT)

OllieB - January 20, 2009 11:18 PM (GMT)

Jacqui23 - January 26, 2009 10:08 AM (GMT)
Hi Is there any news about Ollie & if he has been offered a new home yet? Jacqui runningdog

OllieB - January 27, 2009 12:34 AM (GMT)
Not yet :(

I spoke to a lady today who helps out with a lot of rehoming (and rescuing) farm animals . . she is going to ring back in a few days and reckons the prospects are good.

Catherine - January 28, 2009 02:59 PM (GMT)
I hope this lad gets a new home soon. He is a gorgeous dog.

I would have offered to take home but unfortunately I have a 5 year old.

OllieB - January 30, 2009 05:08 PM (GMT)
He's going to the farm animal lady on Sunday, she wants him there (unless I hear otherwise between now and then).

lunarsquishy - January 30, 2009 06:31 PM (GMT)
