I can recommend Dunbeath in Caithness which is 38 miles from John O'Groats and on the main A9 road.
Dunbeath Strath is excellent and you can walk for miles along the river with some wonderful wildlife.
There is also a dog friendly beach walk which leads to caves and the spectacular Dunbeath Castle.

Dunbeath is a lovely part of NE scotland, have stay there a couple of times. Don't know when I'll get back as the people I stayed with have moved to Portugal.

Well, underneath the snow is a beach !!...and that is my house and car in the background, I and my dogs are very lucky !!
