Title: When is the right time?

Ruth - April 2, 2009 11:28 AM (GMT)
We have decided to have Poppy spayed, she had her last season at the end of February so if i go by what i have been told - 3 months after her season - we should be having her done at the end of May.

The thing is some people have told me different - some say 8 weeks some say it doesn't matter.

Can anyone help!!!

all our foster dogs are done at 4 months after the end of the season to allow everything including hormones to settle again.

Gemma you say 4 months, i have been told 8 - 12 weeks and 3 months - can i ask why 4?

Have always been told 3 months so that it is mid cycle the best time for hormones to be at the correct level.

The best person to ask is your vet.

it must be a suffolk thing then lol all our local vets recommend 4 months, as above though. the best person to ask is your own vet.

I suppose it might vary depending on the bitch. Not all bitches are 6 monthers. My last two were 8-9 monthers. If you know your own bitches cycle, it will give you a better idea but, as the others said, ask your vet and them knowing your bitches cycle length might help them too.

Ahhh that makes sense - Poppy had her first season end June 08 then her second end Feb 09 (we were expecting her to have it end Dec and it never happened).

Thanks will ring vets and see what they say.
