Hi Everyone
On Wednesday Meg was diagnosed with hip dysplacia in her left hip, she is coming up to 4yrs old, That day when I went to pick her up after her x rays, and the vet told me the diagonis, I was in such a state of shock , when I got home I realised there was a 101 questons I should have asked but didn't. We are going back next week so I will try and ask everything then.
But I have just been reading an older post from Feb in this section on HD from 'Woody' and all you guys what replied with advice on this, has made me realise its not the end of the world and they can still enjoy a fairly active life. Also read with intrest all your info on hydro pools, this is something I will be asking my vet about as it seeems to have really good results.
So thanks to all who post with advice.
Margaret

Its not always been easy & sometimes heartbreaking. But most of the time its been fine.

End of last year i couldnt get him sound & finally turned from Holistic, natural & hydro to Chemical!!!_ * _ Metacam__* _

Its been a godsend tbh.

Though at 4 yrs old i kept him easily fit & sound on a mixture of hydro ,Devils claw & Glucosamine.

Theres lots of different combinations to try, just see what suites.

Thing to remeber is that the hip is never going to get any better than it is NOW, but what you need to do is to try to stop or slow down it getting worse.
The only way to do this is to make her develop correct Muscle around it to hold it firmly in place.

Did you see the Xray, how bad was it? what was the right hi[p like?

Like Flynn above one of my bc's Parker has hd.

We do hydro and have started him on a food with Glucosamine in, as he's only just turned 2 we are quite reluctant to give him Metacalm yet on a regular basis until he needs it so only keep it for really bad days.

Parker lives a full and happy life, his hd is to bad to do agility but loves nothing better than running with our other 2 bc's and getting as messy as possible.

If there is anything i can help with please pm me.

Hi thanks for your replies. Vet did show me x rays, but I didn't take much in that day, going back on Thurs with loads of questions. She is on anti inflam tablets (Norocarp) at moment, plus Glucosmine which the vet did say will be a long term supplement. Also said I could have a referal if I wanted to think about surgery, but I would want that to be as a last resort only.
Meg's gait is a lot more profound now on one side as she walks, I suppose she is compensating for the hip which has ben painful for her.
I do feel guilty as I took her to a vet just before christmas when I was picking up signs then something was wrong, but this vet examined her and said she was fine and made me feel like an over protective mum. I still had this feeling though something was not right so I took her back last month and asked to see another vet, who has now confirmed it.
I suppose its finding the right balance of exercise for them, at the moment Meg can only manage about 15 - 20 mins free running before she has had enough, will this improve do you think with medication and hydro?, or would it be better if I lead walk her only at the moment, she would hate this though.
will let you know more on Thur after trip to vets.
It really makes me feel better knowing there is others I can talk to
Thank you
Maragret

Id rest her TOTALLY till she was sound, & at the same time build up the anti inflam etc Gluc etc, get all that into her system.

Once shes sound & the good stuff is all in her system build her up with short lead walks a few times a day, to build up the muscle, use hills, up & down hills to get her to use ther hind quarters & anything else you can think of to get her to use both legs. Just build up like this until shes sound enough to go running, flynn at two - four years could easily cope with a 3 hour walk on exmoor on the beach,

In the meantime get her swimming!!!!!

TBH i thought flynn had put his back out, he was never lame or Bunny hoping or any classic HD symptoms, what he would do is this we are talking 6 months baby.

* trotting, he would trot along quite straight when looked at from behind, but every now and again his hind legs would track out abit, moving out wider, the easiest way tio describle it, is it looked like hed wet himself!!!! tten he would go normal again

**when running ahead he would go from canter to stop, he would never go through the paces & would not trot if he could canter

** when having a blast around & was pushing/pivoting off from his hind legs, if it was extreme angle he would just fal over, i think that his hip must have just being disolcating abit.

he stopped doing all this once i got his muscle up

I have started giving all mine luposan. It has 40% mussel extract in it. Just to give you hope my gsd some years back was diagnosed as having hip displaysia. A great shock to me but she lived to the ripe age of 12 years and had a very active life. So, don't give up hope and let her enjoy life to the full. :)
