Title: Paddy no-nuts
hauntedpaws - April 8, 2009 01:30 PM (GMT)
Paddy is booked in next Thursday to be neutered. bur2
It's a decision I've been toying with for the last 12 months or so. Takes me that long to decide anything! lol
The reason behind it is-
1. I will have 3 entire dogs.....mmm
2. He keeps breaking stays at shows (sniffing)
3. It will prevent any future problems he may develop.
4.I can't stand the bitching anymore - dribbling, chattering and peeing on himself as he walks.
5. He bit my mother-in-law's Cavalier pup through the nose. *shemademe!*
I'm soo worried about the GA though *sad* , and also his lovely coat might go....
Does anyone know of a good supplement or something that I can give him to minimise his coat loss?

YUMEGA for coats - the breeder of my Mally reccomends it and her dogs win BIS sho it must be good :)

But if her dogs win BIS - they must still have their nuts?? (and a nice glossy coat?)
Fallenthorn - April 8, 2009 06:20 PM (GMT)
I didn't realise having a dogs nuts off effected their coats. I am being told to have my littles one nuts done as soon as he is allowed to have it done at 6 months. It took me ages to decide about my cats being spayed but i eventually did it. I suppose the only use for nuts is for breeding and i dont really need Beau to breed although he would be a lovely daddy.... good genes their my lad. hehe. Hope you choose whats right for you honey.

I don't think it affected Bertie's coat, he's got a really big thick coat.
Gemma Wickenden - April 8, 2009 08:21 PM (GMT)
i've had many dogs pass through my doors and only one changed in coat (it went from fine to thick and wavy) another one slowed down in metabolism but thats it.
should you do notice a coat change then perhaps a chat with a good groomer? there may be products to bring it back to its current state should it change??

Parkers coat actually improved after his op - but his balls never dropped so it may be different to a "normal" dog. It took him a few months to get over the hormone problems and we did have to be careful with his weight but otherwise he was ok.
sandrazcollies - April 9, 2009 11:08 AM (GMT)
poor paddy, but i know what you mean about the sniffing and peeing, si was like that, but he changed when nuts came off, but only cos girls picked on him.
buthe still needed doing
just had roonies nuts off as he was trying to mount every thing, the spring weather starts horses off lol
it was great did it out in the field, took 7 mins from start to finish and ronnie was back up walking about in 30 mins with no bother at all
zingi - April 9, 2009 08:21 PM (GMT)

Well, Paddy is going to vets this morning - and I suddenly have the 'guilt of leaving him at the vets' feeling coming along. I hate it - esp as my Mum's cat died under GA, having her teeth cleaned.... nailbiting nailbiting nailbiting
shads2009 - April 16, 2009 07:37 AM (GMT)
he'll be ok bless him he'll be back running about in no time.
I had no idea that it affects their coat, does anyone how it affects their coats and whether it short haired or long haired dogs that it affects? I'm only asking because my vets said to me when Scooby gets to 6months we should get him done but i'm undecided. I suppose its something to think about long and hard.
Good luck today Paddy

shads2009 - April 17, 2009 06:46 PM (GMT)
How is Paddy doing after going to the vets? Hope he's ok
hauntedpaws - April 18, 2009 07:31 AM (GMT)
Paddy's back, safe and sound. He was very, very depressed yesterday (made me feel right guilty), but seems alot brighter today. I'm about to take him back to the vets for a check-up, to make sure there's no infection. It looks very neat.
I can't believe they didn't give a 'lampshade' though - just told me to "keep an eye on him" nailbiting
shads2009 - April 18, 2009 07:48 AM (GMT)
bless him good to hear that he's back home and looking a little happier
Gemma Wickenden - April 18, 2009 09:01 AM (GMT)
if you wanted a collar just incase claire pets at home sell a nice one with padding around the neck area. i hate the elcheapo ones some vets give you so i used to get mine from there.

When Skye was neutered his coat became more 'woolly' and wavy and didnt look as nice. However a year on he is now growing his summer coat and its back to how it was. I have recently changed his food as he also put on weight following neuturing (my fault as things were hectic at home and I forgot that neutered dogs are prone to increase their weight). He is now on CSJ Senior to help with the weight loss and has already lost a small amount of weight, and I think the food has helped improve his coat.
Unless you intend to show your dog I would still neuter, I lost a very special dog to prostrate cancer which he wouldnt have got had he not been entire.

alot of people say they neutor there's because of behavoural problems they are hyper or something. I've also say that it can make a calm dog agressive i'm undecided because Scooby is a very calm dog only gets excited when new people come to the house and i dont want to change him. I don't want to breed from because there are alot of unwanted border collies out there but i also like his temprement. does anyone have any advice please?
hauntedpaws - April 18, 2009 01:58 PM (GMT)
I had to take Paddy back to vet this morning - he's been messing wiv his stiches (must have been overnight).
They gave me a 'lampshade' for him - but he TOTALLY freaked out and won't keep it on, he shakes his head around like a bucking bronco. I've put it on so tight I was choking him yikes , and he STILL got it off. :o((
He's now wearing a t-shirt back to front.......with his legs through the sleeves and tied in the middle.
They gave him more anti-biotics, more anti-inflammatorys, and another £22......sigh.... headwallbash
shads2009 - April 18, 2009 02:51 PM (GMT)
oh bless him poor little fella hope he's ok soon

Course he was - he was almost choking it was that tight yikes
I can't believe it myself - I've never seen him so stressed.... *sad*
char - April 20, 2009 04:52 PM (GMT)
Just seen your post on facebook, poor boy. When Ricky was done they put a bandage through the bits where the collar goes, so it was stretchy and he could get it over his head. Thoughtthey might have done same with pad - he must be really stressed to try get that off!
hauntedpaws - April 21, 2009 01:05 PM (GMT)
Well, I 've been back to vet....
His wound is now weeping and infected....So he's on a course of anti-biotics.
He stiil won't wear collar. I tried attaching the 'lampshade' collar to a body harness with cable ties, and he STILL got it off - throwing himself around and wetting himself. I've given up on it now.
I can put the lampshade on - and he just sits there like a statue. When he goes to move....all hell breaks loose!

I'm keeping him in a t-shirt for now, when I'm at work and at night. He seems a lot happier with it-

rolleyes*

But he even gets that off overnight.....I'm at my wits end...... headwallbash
Canis-Lupess - April 21, 2009 01:43 PM (GMT)
I feel your pain. Sleet was exactly the same when she did her paws in and had to have those stitched up. I managed to keep the first lampshade on after the first few tries but, within 2 days, it was made more of gaffer tape holding it together than it was of plastic. Wren didn't help wanting to also "Play", with it whilst it was attached to Sleet so the edges of it were also all chewed and covered in teeth marks. The vet nurses laughed at it when I showed them. She also managed to get around the edge of it to keep mauling one of the wounds.
The vets gave us another larger one in the end.
I've been mulling over getting my two spayed but it's all this type of thing and other worries that is stopping me from doing it.
My last two dogs could have anything done, never had to wear a buster collar and never messed with any bandages or anything. They were such Angels. Also both Border Collies.
mishflynn - April 21, 2009 07:54 PM (GMT)
How is he today? is itlooking better? cant believe youve had so much trouble :(
hauntedpaws - April 21, 2009 08:53 PM (GMT)
The wound still weeping, but he's only on day 2 of anti-biotics, so I'll give it time. Been batheing it with salt water, hibi-scrub and ....TCP!! Poor Paddy he's so good, just lies there, letting you do anything to it.
He's ok in himself, he just can't understand why he's got to wear a t-shirt.....Hope he gets better soon... *sad*
leanneh - April 22, 2009 06:17 AM (GMT)
Aw bless him - poor boy!! He is looking absolutely gorgeous though despite his troubles!!
Love the picture of him with the cone - looks so cute and innocent!
