Title: Wot food?
179shaz179 - April 11, 2009 06:28 PM (GMT)
Hello everyone im just wondering wot food u use for ur BCs and how often u feed them, wot time of day is it.
So mant people say different things, its hard to know wots best. Odie weight is fine, hes not over weight so i must be doing it right. Im just wondering wot everybody else does.
I only feed him one a day and its normally around 5pm. He eats Bakers dry food.

Sorry to say but Bakers is an awful food. It's full of cereals & deriatives and contains carcinogenic chemical preservatives and artificial colourants. yikes
Pretty much any other food (apart from Pedigree) would be an improvement. Anything found in the supermarkets are generally low quality. James Wellbeloved, Burns, Arden Grange and Orijen are some of the better dry foods.
I feed my four raw meat and bones:

I looked at that web site and to be honest i wouldnt feed him that. As for givin a dog a whole pigs head to chew on........ well thats horrible.
Im guessing u must have money cause to feed a dog that sort of diet everyday is very expensive.
Think i will stick to wot hes on now. His healthy and has a good coat and teeth on him so it cant be that bad.
Thanks for ur input neway.

Hi i feed Scooby twice aday 7:30am and 5:30pm but he is a only 24weeks old and he is on a food from Jollyes pet shop its a working dog food and its a small bite. I was reccomended it from my partners aunty who feeds her 3 on it, she has a lab, collie cross and a terrier and they all love it. She said that she feeds them on it because of how active they all are.
I also have one of those cups you can get from the petshop and he has a cup in the morning and a cup in the evening its good because it measures out their food.

actually AJ is right. Bakers is the worst possible food you can feed any dog let alone a BC. believe me i used to work in the factory and have seen what passes as beef nailbiting
i feed raw too but i must say i've never fed a whole pigs head lol this is my supplier
http://www.landywoods.co.uk/index.html as it goes it costs me around £30 for 3 dogs for 6 weeks! not expensive at all.
the best thing you can do for your dog is get him off that shite. as has already been mentioned get him on a good quality food such as JWB, burns, CJS but if you dont want to buy good quality (spend the retail price) then wagg or chappie will do his little insides much better than bakers. (btw there is always wainwrights, pets at homes own version of JWB)
ps would you manage all your food rations at once and feel good? when i fed dry food (JWB) i fed twice a day, i currently feed my dogs a fruit/veg ration in the morning, something boney be it bones/chicken wings/turkey necks at lunch and a minced meat or fish portion for tea.

I wouldnt know where to start with that web site. nor how much i need lol.
It costs u the same as good as, as me then. I dint know that bakers complete mix was so bad.
I must admit i really dont like the idea of giving him raw meet. dont know y, just scared it will make him bad.
I dint think u were ment to give dogs chicken bones, thought it could get stuck in there thoat!!
I dont know wot to think now. i thought i was doin the right thing by feeding him this. Its not a really cheep food so i thought it would be good.Maybe i was wrong!

the food i get scooby costs around £8 for a 15kg bag and he really enjoys it its also tax free too.
I always thought the same as u that dogs weren't supposed to eat chicken bones. I haven't thought about putting scooby on a raw meat diet coz i wouldn't know where to start with it. But at the end of the day its up to u wat u feed your dog on

Hi,
Have to agree with the others that Bakers is not a good food for border collies apart from the colours etc it is also high in protein which can cause them to be hper active and have behaviour problems.
We feed our collies on CSJ its £18.20 for a hypoallergic one (one of my bcs has a wheat allergy) and around £10-12 per 15 kilo bag for the others. They do 3 different ranges as well. It is designed for working dogs so theres no VAT on it which helps keep the price down, plus it doesnt come in fancy packaging either.
you can get to their website
http://www.csjk9.com/productcart/pc/viewCategories.aspWe feed our collies twice a day, morning and evening and occassionally give them raw chicken wings, uncooked chicked bones are harmless but dont given cooked bones as this softens them and makes them likely to splinter and cause problems.
We also give them apples and carotts raw as a treat and they really enjoy them.

I know im being really thick now but im gonna say it neway. Dont they get sick from eating raw meat if there not used to it ?
Gemma Wickenden - April 15, 2009 06:50 AM (GMT)
nope. all my new fosters and stray dogs are given the minced meat. the chicken wings/turkey necks and the ribs i get form the butchers they need to learn to chew up so they dont swallow whole or try to gorge (try telling a dalmatian they cant swallow something that good in one!)
my shih tzu was an oldie when i changed her and to her it was a god send, Tinka has been riased on it since i brought her home (11 weeks) the dals thought all their christmasses had come at once lol

Mine have raw food too, they have completely different digestive system to us.
CSJ is probably an ideal food for him, raw food can be confusing on whats right to give to them and what they need. If you google CSJ dog food you'll find their website. It would be a far better food for him than Bakers which is an awful food.

Thanks evryone for your help, im looking into changing his food from bakers now. Also going to have a chat with my vet. Thanks again. beersmilie
Gemma Wickenden - April 15, 2009 12:51 PM (GMT)
something along the lines of CSJ would probably be good for you and much better than him. i dont know why you would want to ask your vet but what ever you do do not get talked into hills science plan.

I've notice that whenever you go into any vets thats what they have on display for you to buy and its also an expensive food as well. Thats what the vet tried me to feed Scooby on that but he didn't take to the little welcome pack of food that my vet gave me.

Bakers is definitely not the right food for a BC, the colours in it sends them loopy from what I have seen.
My two boys are fed on Arden Grange performance during the summer due to competing in agility and then go on to the normal chicken & rice during the winter.
My young girlie is on fish Orijen and is looking fantastic on it. It does have a high protein level but this hasnt affected her at all and there has been no change in her energy levels so dont believe all that you read.
TheMuttsMum - May 7, 2009 03:53 PM (GMT)
My two are fed CSJ and are very well on it. They have either Natural That'll Do or Natural Herbie Nuts.
It costs me around £28-30 for the two of them every 7 weeks or so.
They also have raw chicken wings and some veg occasionally.
They are fed once a day in the evening when they have dry food and if they are having chicken that day they have that in the morning.
I second what everyone else has said, Bakers is pretty awful I'm afraid.

I've just changed my adult boys food over to Supadog Sensitive. Brilliant!!! Hard poos, and they like it - and the best bit - IT'S CHEAP!!!! *thumb*
BCBrie - June 2, 2009 05:58 PM (GMT)
Brie has been on Nutro, Pedigree, Bakers and Burns.
Dogs react differently to different foods. Brie was fine on pedigree and bakers. The Nutro, supposedly really good food, gave her a really bad case of gas...and thats what she was weaned on. She is on Burns now cuz i felt like changing it. She loves the chicken one.
