Title: Draven's starting agility this week..
Draven - May 3, 2009 09:00 AM (GMT)
I'm really excited about it, we were meant to start last week but the weather was bad so it was cancelled.
Any advice for us? Hehe, rather nervous cause I don't want to make myself look stupid.

Went today.
We did alright but he was distracted a lot because of how much was going on.
Not fond of dog walk at all, but he love love lovesss tunnels.
And I was very happy, he was fine with all the dogs!

Was a lot better this week, tugger toy worked like a charm with recalls, he's still a bit jumpy at the dog walk, but I think that is because he is trying to go over it too fast and losing his balance.
Any tips on making a headstrong dog stop on contacts?
At the moment I am putting my hand under his stomach or infront of his chest to stop him, but sometime he just pushes through that.

If you practice your contacts away from the equipment i.e. on stairs and once he can drive at speed to them them backchain them onto the obstacles. Always at first make him stop at the contact zone just so he knows that the obstacle includes not just running over the obstacle but doing the entire obstacle properly also includes hitting the up and down contacts. At first make sure he always stops at his down contact, don't release him until he does stop and soon you should have a foolproof contact where you can keep running and he will still be nose touching the ground waiting for mum to say the go word!
