With my previous dog I dabbled in a bit of obedience showing but never really got too far, however I did use to enjoy going. With my current pup who is now three months we take her to a puppy class on a saturday morning mainly so my wife who has not owned a dog before can get used to doing things with her and I also take her to my previous club on a tuesday evening, neither of these are set up for competitive training more to do with basic good handling aiming towards GCDS awards. I had noticed that another club (also on tuesday nights) holds classes for puppies aimed at competitive obedience. Does anyone have any experience of what is done differently in basic puppy training if you're intending to do competitive obedience?? Lexi is coming along well and I have no worries about her basic obedience but was wondering if I should be doing anything differently even at this stage if I plan to do competitive work with her when she's older.
Thanks
hi the level of heel work expected even from a small puppy when you want to compete is totally diff to the walk on a loose lead for GS you could do both but you will find esp the hw you could just used another command to get the dog on your leg when you decided you want to train hw the attention needed is a lot lot higher the recall retrieve and stays will be the same but more attention to details will be needed i would suggest if you want to compete later on you train for it while your pup is young it is earlier you can still carry on with the GS things as well :D
