Title: hip displasia
Description: anyone had fho on puppy

oscar - May 22, 2009 07:02 PM (GMT)
Hi I am a new member, our border collie (oscar) was diagnosed with severe hip displasia at five months, we have him on Rymadyl & Glucosamine, we are considering having FHO surgery on both his hips & would be grateful to hear anyones experience or advice, regarding this operation. We have always had border collies and have been very fortunate in never having had any HD before, we love our puppy and our thirteen year old (who thinks hes 5) but we are desperate to know what to do for the best we want the best chance for him.

Thanks for listening Sandy & Phil.

Thank you for your replies, I have read the articles on HD on this site, and I wish we could manage his HD with exercise etc. but its not possible, he is on restricted walks, a small amount of play with our older boy and medication, to give him a relatively pain free life its hip replacement or FHO (where they shave the femoral head so its muscle that forms a joint (I believe) he is a pet not working dog so we just wondered if anyone else had had this done on their border collie, he will need both sides doing, and although the specialist has explained a lot to us we do not know anyone who has had this done to their dog.

His hydrotherapist says she has had plenty of dogs attend for physio after this operation and it gives good results, she has had three collies who have returned to an active life after the op, it would seem the only option he has against this crippling disease.

Thank you for your interest.

I have a dog with HD but we are lucky and can control it with Hydro and other methods at the moment without resorting to surgery.

But i have also heard a lot of good results from this op and personally know a staffi that has had it done to both hips and lives a very happy life, she can run and play like normal dogs but still has to be carefull - hydro helped build her muscles up and i know she has the same food mine do with glucosamine in to help her joints.

I hope the op goes well for your puppy and you let us know how he gets on.
