Title: Poorly Vince

leanneh - June 8, 2009 11:45 AM (GMT)
Poor Vince has had to be admitted to have an emergency op today as they think a grass seed has travelled in through his paw.

I noticed he was licking his paw Saturday and at the flyball event H and Al bathed his paw and sprayed it bright purple with sheep antiseptic!! We have been cleaning it and putting antiseptic powder on it. Saturday night Paul pulled a grass seed out.

This morning he was still hopping and it started bleeding again so I took him to the vet and he's been admitted. Poor boy.

I was only reading last week about grass seeds and the damage they can do - so beware!!!!

Poor Vince, hope he's feeling better soon.

It was a grass seed that caused all the problems with Skye when she was a puppy, I found a swelling on her jaw at an agility show, phoned the vets, took her the next morning, they gave her anti-inflamitories and said if it didn't go down they would operate, it actually got bigger a couple of days later, so they operated and found an abcess, that they left open to drain. Then a couple of months later she had a pea sized lump again in the same place, so they operated again and found a grass seed, the swelling didn't go completely for about a month.

Tara had a bad one once, it went through her paw & came out at her fetlock, she still had a abscess on her paw, i had a dig around & found another, it was minging, pulled it out "COVERED" in pus, yuck!!!!!

Im really fussy now, i wont run them in fields like that & if they do accidentally i spend HOURS picking them off. I have nightmares, what if they get in a eye!!!!!

NEllie once had a limp, her paw felt hot, i squezzes it & it opened up & a different type of seed fell out , a round one & it was sproutting!!!!!

MIsh - yuk!!!

Got Vince home last night and the vet was very pleased as she'd managed to remove a long grass seed. Vince was very dopey last night and wouldn't talk to me!!

This morning he is almost back to his normal self - he can walk on that paw again which is a good sign and he has already had a play fight with |Tess!!

The vet clipped some of his fur on his fet to make it easier for me to examine them after walks. I am going to be fussier and more vigilant after this. YOu hear horror stories and think it is rare but this has taught me to watch out for teh dreaded grass seeds!!

Thanks everyone for your concern
