Kassie had her first seizure back in December age four and a half. Vet did a pile of tests which uncovered things like her only having one and a half kidneys and a mis-formed gall bladder but nothing to directly explain the epilepsy so he's put it down as generalised ideopathic epilepsy.
As she'd only had the one he didn't start medication straight away, nor after she had her second a month later. A week later she clustered, three in a day and another vet at the practice did obs on her and started her on Phenobarb, 30mg twice daily. Acouple more evening seizures but no clusters.
Back to the first vet for blood tests for liver function etc, not at theraputic levels so he he upped it to 90 a day which he suggested we give 45/45. Carol (who is is an epilepsy nurse) suggested 30/60 would be better and got slapped down.
We did 30/60 anyway and all was fine until we needed a repeat prescription. Another disagreement and we got told do it his way or no tablets. So we did. Two days later another cluster, then another. Saw another vet at the practice and Carol asked for (and got) diazepam to use PRN to try and stop the clustering.
Pheno upped to 60/60.
Upshot is that we still have uncontrolled seizures and a very unhappy dog. Looking at her she's "not right", very yappy and she appears to be having continual ictal activity. Our other dog is also getting very stressed.
We're not sure where to go from here. In her patients Carol would use Keppra (as do some vets) but ours will only suggest adding bromide to the existing mix.
Anyone else had similar experience or got any suggestions?
All the best
