Title: Health issues
sketch - August 26, 2009 09:33 AM (GMT)
I am a paranoid owner unfortunately and want the best for my fury kids, so just wanted to know if BC's are prone to anything.
Like GSD's because of there size can suffer from bloat etc, hip problems.
I know that i should not use Milbemax wormer, and also they are allergic to fleas, so i read.
Are there any other things BC's can suffer from apart from normal doggy issues.
Thanks for humouring me

Ohh a whole ton of things!
Hip dysplasia
Epilepsy
Elbow dysplasia
Collie Eye (CEA)
Those are the most common things. If the parents have good results for the above things (although unfortunately there is not a test for epi) then there is a smaller chance that your dog will be affected by them.

There's also PRA and glaucoma, unfortunately not DNA tests yet, but prospective parents should have an annual eye test. I'm just in the process of getting all Skye's health tests done for breeding her this winter, she just had her blood taken yesterday for optigen testing CEA/CH and CL, I should hear back in 2-3 weeks and she still needs her glaucoma test. It's cost me £400 so far for the tests she's had.

Hope all goes well with the tests Debbie. keep us posted.
I dont think i woulde like to breed, its all alot to think about so ill leave it to the experts. Good breeders such as yourself are hard to find with any breed arnt they.
Just wanted to keep myself informed really with illneses, for warned and all that jazz
