Title: Obedience, where do I start
sketch - September 3, 2009 12:01 PM (GMT)
Libby is 9 weeks old on saturday, and would love to have a go at obedience with her, How do I know if she is cut out for this, what age is it best to start, also i live in Shropshire, so not far from the midland, and wolverhampton area.
Dalton is doing schutzhund training, but never seen a collie doing it, so wanted to do something with her, as I hate working breeds looking bored and fed up, it makes me feels so sad, so like to keep mine busy as they get into a lot less trouble.
so any advice on where to start would be fab, im teaching her the basics now, but would love to belong to a class etc

If I were to do competitive obedience I'd be looking for a good club in my area to start as soon as possible.
I don't know about shutzhund, but I have a few friends that compete at Working Trials with their BC's.

I have thought about working trial, but im new to the BC world really all i know is i want to work her, and keep her stimulated, The schutzhund world as far as i am aware are all GSD's, dobies,Rotties etc, all large breed, although she is fiesty enough and doesnt think twice about swinging on Dalton's maine haha.
But think she will bebefit from working.
I will have to google obedience clubs, its a case of finding a good one isnt it, i think there is one in wolverhampton Debbie, not sure

Hey - now you're talking my language! *thumb*
There is a few clubs in Wolveerhampton, but it depends how seriously you want to take it. If you just want to learn the basics, down , sit stay etc, then a pet club will be fine. If, however, you want to aim for serious competition obedience then it's worth shopping around. I don't belong to any club (I'm in Worcester) , simply because I would probably know more than them, lol. And thats not blowing my own trumpet, btw.
I meet up with a few friends and we'll share ideas on different things.
You could always come over to me? beersmilie

I dont think worcester is that far, im pants a geography lol.
The thing is I am quite put off, i have two GSD's as you may know, anyway, my big boy Dalton, a willfull little git it ever there was one, a real wolf in sheeps clothing haha, I was told her needed a behaviourist, and he was a rescue waiting to happen, when infact the trainer i chose just didnt know how to handle him, he is a firm but fair kind of Dog, basically there is nothing wrong with him, he is of German working lines, and they are all like this, from this breedline, to cut a long story short he is toy trained, treats dont have a high enough value to him, everything has to be worth his while or you can forget it.
The trainer were pet dog trainers, and I am sorry as i dont want to offend anyone, i would never do it, they just hadnt got a clue how to handle this type of GSD, so thought he was a nutter, when all he wanted was guidance, and given lots to do.
He is very much "mum whats next, what shall we do" etc, too focused sometimes.
Anyway, thats why i want a great trainer who knows how to work a Farmyard BC, and would love to put the work in to do obedience on a competative level, if possible.
I believe in most working breeds there are working dogs, who are high energy and need a job, and then there are pet dogs, My other GSd Kane is very much a pet GSd bless him, he knows the basics, but doesnt want to work, he wants to be fed, played with, loved and chase butterflies bless his heart.
sorry thats turned into a long post, but you can see my concerns
