Title: How big will he be?

Elena - October 11, 2009 11:12 AM (GMT)
I have a male border collie from working stock who is just over 4 months old. he is my first border, and is healthy and happy. I wonder, however whether he will be big for his breed or small. He is currently 25lbs and 17 inches from his foreleg feet to his shoulder blades. he seems quite large to me as he is so young, but as he is my first i dont know if this is right. he is not overweight or underweighth. any advice much appreciated
thanks in advance
Elena

In general, the dogs are between 19 - 22inches and 14 - 20 kgs, and bitches are 18 -21 inches and 12 - 19kgs

As ever, being under or over these numbers makes no difference unless you intend to Show your dog. At 4 months, your dog has a lot more growing to do. I would say your dog is likely to be at the larger end of the numbers. You can see the growth pattern by looking at my eldest bitch - Milly- here from puppy to adult - http://www.cbhughes.com/6.html -
Click on Tosca and Storm for the same growth photo show

I have 3 bitches - 2 are 18 inches and 15kg, and the other is 19 inches and 19.5kg. Most people who see them who don't know BC's remark they seem small - not realizing that they are within the normal range rolleyes*

hi there, my pup is a pedigree BC, her parents were a mixture of show and ISDS registered pedigree, but both did seem to have long legs.

Maggie is now just over 6 months and she weighs almost 16kg and is over 18" in height already!

I am guessing her growth will now slow down a bit but I think she is going to be the bigger end of the scale for females...

I think the best indicator is often the parents, and I know both of hers were quite long-legged and tall, so I am guessing she is probably going to be too.

I find myself having to excuse her mental behaviour in the park by telling people we meet that she is still only 6 months, as she is so big people think she is a lot older and should be calmer! ...although pretty sure she is still going to be nuts when she is 6 years!

it is fun to watch them grow though isnt it!! :-)
