Many races exist in the city of Arcana. Some are what they are by virtue of their genetics while others changed their racial status through scientific means. They have been divided up and categorized for your benefit.

Angels

This race is exclusive to a certain syndicate. The size, color, and shape of the wings are all a complex code indicating the angel's status within the organization. The wings are created from the patient's genetic material and practically grown in a lab, crossing human DNA with the bird of choice and then are surgically attached to the patient.

Armadilons

Armadilons are people who had their bodies genetically modified to be able to harden their skin at will. Armadilons have long, thick claws on their hands as well . Because this is so expensive, most Armadilons either work for the government or belong to rich families. There are different levels of Armadilon though. All Armadilons must be registered with the Office of C.R.O.S.S. and carry identification as an Armadilon. The L2's and L3's all have eartags.

L1 – These types are completely human looking. When they harden their skin it is almost unnoticeable unless you strike it, and instead of claws their fingernails just become longer, sharper, and harder to break. Since this is the cheapest of the Armadilon surgery, these are the most common kind.

L2 – Unlike the level 1’s, these Armadilons lack some of their humanity. Their eyes are yellowish, and they have long nails. When they harden their skin it is noticeable, and the skin looks much like shingled armor. Their nails now become claws, and they are at least 4 inches long and can be used for digging. However, their shell is almost 3x as durable as that of a level one Armadilon. Many with these modifiers come from rich families or work for government/syndicate members.

L3 – These Armadilons are totally inhuman. Their skin is always shelled, their eyes are bright yellow, and they always have their claws showing. Unlike the other two forms, they don’t need to morph their skin into armor. They also have the ability to roll into a ball, using their bodies as both a weapon and a shield. Their skin is almost 2x as durable as that of a level 2. Many, if not all of these types, work for the highest-ranking officials.

Banshees

Banshees are humans with genetically modified lung sacks. Unlike normal humans their lungs can hold gigantic amounts of air. Banshees have two main abilities. One is the not very impressive but useful ability to hold their breathes for long amounts of time. The second is the ability to release that air in destructive wave. The collected winds can reach the power of a small tornado, blowing away objects like cars and humans.

Because of their powers, Banshees have a common need for lung-related medicines and, in more severe cases, surgery. Because of this, they usually need a steady source of money. So, most Banshees either have to use their power scarcely or belong to a rich family, syndicate, or government office.

Cyber Brains

Cyber Brains are classified as humans whose brains are partially electronic. Cyber Brains have the ability to process data and learn at an extremely fast rate and the ability to store their memories in other places , they also have greater ability to remember than humans and calculate situations and come up with logical answers better. Cyber Brains are usually employed by the government as both hackers and protects. Because of their fast processing skills they are also skilled in battle, being able to evade and counter quickly.

However, because such large portions of their brains are electronic, Cyber Brains lack the ability to express or comprehend many of the emotions that normal humans express naturally. While complete lack of emotion is usually only shown in people whose brains are almost totally electronic, most of the ones with lesser surgery still understand some emotion.

Homo Psypians

Of all the races, the Psyps are the only race that developed without surgical or cosmetic techniques. After the war that created their world, mankind evolved or at least tried to. The evolution was achieved little by little through successive generations of the spiritually aware and their breeding. They evolved alright, becoming humans with inborn abilities that set them apart from other humans- ESP, a keen 6th sense, telekinesis, telepaths, touch-knows, automatic writers, astral travellers, etc. If it had to do with the spirit, the afterlife, or the mind, the Psyps were able to do it. Some rare lines were more advanced than the others, having several of these traits while the majority have only one or two abilities. However, the more abilities one has, the less powerful they seem while those with one gift are very strong with it. Currently, most Psyps live in Upper Arcana, the most talented ones being drafted and indoctrinated into the government and military. This group includes the Ethrites, among others but is used to describe anyone with psychic or spiritualist ability. Loosely related and newer are the Leeches.

Lupines (Werewolves) – Lupines are humans that were either infected or born with an advance case of a severe rabies infection. Overtime the infection combined with their DNA and became apart of their own bodies. Though powerful, Lupines are easily aggravated, sometimes going on rampages when that happens. Because of this Lupines are usually only accepted by other Lupines or people who want to use them for their own personal gain.

L1 – These Lupines have no transformation abilities that are known, however their hair does grow at an extremely fast rate. Their eyes are also feral and their teeth are somewhat fanglike in structure, they also have very sharp nails. Lupines of this level can also see for over a mile and have very sensitive noses, their jumping ability and hearing is greater too. Being the weakest of the levels their power isn’t that great, only having about 3 times the strength of a normal man. However, they do not suffer the same drawbacks as the other levels.

L2 – These are the first set of Lupines with actual transformation ability. They are only a little bit stronger than level ones, and they have the same symptoms, however they are a little bit faster being able to run at almost twice the speed of a human. When enraged Lupines of this level will start to lose their sense of rationality and their bodies will be completely covered with hair. Their nails will become as sharp and thick as claws and their teeth will become completely fanged. In this form they are twice as strong as a level one and a little faster than they usually are in their normal form.

L3 – The last and strongest set of Lupines, these types are distinguished for their control over their wolfen forms. In their human bodies, they are almost threes times as fast as a normal human and almost three times as fast. They can see and smell scents over two miles away, they are even able to hear a fly buzzing from over fifty feet away. They are much more agile than a normal human and some are said to even have tails outside of their beast form. When transformed they are able to reach speeds of about 50 MPH(for a few seconds) and can jump about 3 stories upward. They 10 times stronger than a normal man and their claws are stronger than stone. However, even though they have control over this form staying in it for too long aggravates the infection in the fully morphed form for about 5-10 minutes at most.

Leeches (Homo Energens or Homo Electrigens)
A Leech has the ability to draw out energy from something (machines, batteries, even people) by making contact with it. They can store it in their bodies and even transfer the energy to something else. Talented Leeches have the ability to take the energy that they store in their body and use it in combat or for the purpose of hacking computers. This race is very, very new and rides on the waves of the bunch of humans that evolved. From the geekdens and worlds of MMORPGs, these groups chose to evolve electronically. It took quite some time and the need to wait for the Psyps to develop first but soon enough, the Leeches evolved. This race is rather rare since as we all know, most geeks don't get laid. (That last bit was a joke but Leeches are rare)

Terrapains: Terrapains are normal humans that have been genetically combined with DNA from a certain species of turtle or tortoise. Depending on which type a human is combined with, that Terrapain will have the traits and abilities, even some of the looks of the species. Terrapains can't be born, they can only be genetically manufactured, and the procedure isn't cheap. The name Terrapain was dubbed because of the lengthy, and painful, operation required. Due to the expenses of the operations, most Terrapains work for high ranking government officials as bodyguards, since a shell on your back means more protection for your boss and more money for you. There are different levels of Terrapains, all ranging in abilities, attributes, and prices.

Level 1: Terrapains of this level look remotely human, being about 10% turtle and 90% human. After undergoing the extensive surgery, patients who chose this level acquire a thicker, harder, more difficult-to-break skin. Also, their skin is slightly altered in terms of color and appearance, depending on the turtle chosen to combine with. Strength is increased slightly along with sense of smell. There aren’t many choices of turtles for this level, being the simplest to combine with humans. This makes it the cheapest of the operations, but it still costs a pretty penny. It lacks the advantages of the higher levels, but also doesn’t have the setbacks those levels have.

Level 2: Terrapains of this level are perfect hybrids, 50% turtle and 50% human. Undergoing this level of surgery gives all the benefits of the first level, with the addition of a thick shell on the Terrapain’s back instead of thicker skin. Hands and feet more closely resemble that of a turtle in this level, big, heavy appendages that add to strength. Muscles in the arms and legs are improved, great for trudging around in swamps and bogs. Tortoises are offered in this level, meaning very good bodyguards for the person who employs one. Walking on hind legs is more difficult, since the addition of the shell and extra muscle weight requires harder work to balance. Also, Terrapains of this level get appetites for peculiar things, like some types of plants humans don’t usually eat.

Level 3: The most expensive level of Terrapain transformation, having all the advantages of the first two levels. Being 90% turtle, 10% human, Terrapains of this level look like giant turtles or tortoises with the surprising ability of speech. The shells of these Terrapains are the hardest and sturdiest of all, some even able to stop a bullet cold. Also, some Terrapains of this level can withdraw entirely into their shell, making a formidable shield around their body. But Terrapains of this level have a somewhat slurred speech, not used to talking with a different tongue. Also, their appetite for foods turtles and tortoises eat is greater. If you chose to be combined with a sea turtle at this level, you’ll find seaweed and other aquatic plants on your mind when dinnertime rolls around. Also if you chose a sea turtle, don't expect to get anywhere fast, since flippers aren't well suited for land travel.

Reiishiken

An increasingly rare race, the Reiishiken are a people whom have united old fighting techniques with the new technology in the world today.

In terminology, Reiishiken are closest to samurai and ninja, though the fighting styles and methods of killing the opponent are on a much higher realm. Reiishiken create their swords and treat them as delicately as their ancestors did, but there is one key difference that allows them to be put on fighting terms with their gun-weilding foes: during the sword creation, at the most delicate section of the sequence, the swordscrafter must cover the entire sword in a clay that is scraped away, giving various unique temper lines and each sword its own individual shape. In Reiishiken forging, the clay used has special properties.

This clay, known as Haganekaze, is constructed on the atomic level by the Reiishiken in small, undergound facilities. Haganekaze has a unique molecular effect: it was stir atmospheric particles within a large radius of itself, causing a whirlwind of sorts (which shares the same name as the substance that produces it) to swirl continuously around the clay. The Reiishiken use this clay on their swords during the forging process, and consequently, the blade itself gains this Haganekaze for battle.

More specifically, a whirlwind is constantly circling the sword, though it appears as if there is but a mere haze when one looks upon it. If bullets are fired, the Haganekaze can deflect the bullets away from the blade, and if someone is struck by the sword, the Haganekaze will increase the amount of damage given.

A special technique that most Reiishiken learn is the Bifuuken, which occurs when a Reiishiken swings the blade with such force as to hurl some of the Haganekaze at his opponent. If the whirlwind hits the target, a condensed series of cuts slice the opponent. This gives these sword weilders a long range attack to deal with projectile users.

Despite all Reiishiken being able to use these special properties, they have not forgotten that each sword is unique to the individual...the Haganekaze clay will give each blade a different colored tinge, and Reiishiken sword masters teach their students various fighting styles to help them survive in the world of guns and explosives.

There is...of course, absolutely nothing preventing Reiishiken from using these other weapons. In fact, it is recommended for each of them to carry various grenades to use in tight situations. But for the most part...they hold a great respect for their own sword, and would have to be placed in a most dire situation to have to use anything else.

A special blood-passed technique that follows the genetic line of Reiishiken is the unique ability to feel the harmonic waves of one's life force. Due to this, a Reiishiken can almost never be caught in a surprise attack, and can judge how much vitality their opponent has. In addition, Reiishiken naturally have lighter bones, to make use of the Biffu more effectively.

Reiishiken tend to not involve themselves with the government of the world. Their goals and plans are personal and tend to involve as little people as possible. Every now and then, however, a Reiishiken warrior will play an important role in the world, and it is from those warriors that the other various races know of these swordsmen's existence.

Changelings:

Changelings are people who have modified their bodies using nano-technology to be able to change their physical appearance. Because this trait is not embedded within one's DNA, Changelings can not be born, rather they must be created. Due to their special abilities many Changelings find jobs as spy's for major corporations wishing to learn more about competitors new products.

L1 - These Changelings have nanobots embedded in their skin cells only. This is the cheapest of all operations to get and, is most commonly seen. Level one's can change the appearance of their skin at will to many different solid colors, or even to remove blemishes from their skin. Only the most experienced of this group can change their skin to appear in patters, such as leopard stripes or camouflage. Many people believe that level one's are more beautiful then Naturals and therefor many take jobs as models.

L2 - Level two Changelings have nanobots embedded in there skin and muscles. These Changelings have all the powers of level one's as well as some others. The nanobots in their muscles take care and work the tissues so that they are strong and healthy. Level two's are about two times stronger and faster then Naturals and tend to live much longer lives (if they die of natural causes.) Also, because the nanobots are more advanced level two's can change their outside appearance to match that of someone else. As a result, level two's are most commonly spys. This operation is more costly then the level one operation and therefore is rarer.

L3 - Changelings of this level have taken the idea of a Changeling to an extreme. They have nanobots embedded in every cell of their body. This means that, if they wish, level three's can change their appearance to match that of animals or even inanimate objects. The process of rearranging all off ones molecules at once is extremely painful and there is a time limit of 5-15 minutes that a level three can stay completely changed. Changeling of this level are extremely rare, and because the technology is still experimental, most work for the government.

Minotaurs

One of the most dangerous races out there. Minotaurs are government controlled and all carry an eartag and are required to have a nose ring to mark them as minotaurs for the good of public safety. They are most regulated race and there are several levels of minotaurism.

L1: Tall, exceptionally strong, tag and nosering required. These minotaurs are most frequently seen as bodyguards to those who can afford it. They look like massive humans and sometimes have horns.

L2: These minotaurs have horns, tag, nosering, and tails. They have the strength of two L1's and rather easy to spot.

L3: These are the most recognizable with their bull's heads and hands that when curled into fists look like hooves. They have the strength of 4 L2's and are murderously strong. Double tags and a heavy nosering are required.

L4: These minotaurs are merely rumored to exist. They are the farthest from humanity that one can get and are about 5% human 95% feral bull. Only the government has L4s and they are used to guard sensitive material.

Vampires

Vampirism is a disease that man created on his own. It started in the vampiric subcultures of the 20th and 21st century. The HIV virus was rampant at that time and with the advent of the drug Serenity, the virus mutated into a form that scientists could only describe as vampiric. The victims were many and the effect of the disease differed from ethnic to racial group, consumed by a lust for blood and were systematically exterminated by the government. A few escaped the genocide and managed to form an alliance and set up rules to prevent something like that from ever happening again. Right now, vampires keep to themselves and try to be discreet. The disease is transferrable via sexual intercourse or the victim gets blood infected with the vampiric virus into their system.
