bryan163 - May 4, 2009 08:31 PM (GMT)
If anyone would like to follow the progress of my turbo build, I will be posting pics and updates over the next couple of weeks on my cardomain page. This should be an interesting one. Turbo Maxima build

I'm using this car to mock up the turbo setup so I won't have to take my car off the road untill the day everything is fabbed up and ready for a quick install.

LOL. A quick install. Let me know what your idea of quick is?

my idea of a quick install is not to have the car laid up for more than one day. Don't laugh. It can be done with the right preparation. I did a similar project on my Thunderbird. It was my only car at the time and I never took it off the road.

Sure. I take it from your ID that you might have some experience with turboing a 4th gen? Any tips you can offer would be great.

Suicidalspd99 - May 7, 2009 03:49 AM (GMT)
Gonna be a long day. You changing the exhaust manifolds?

No. the parts I made will bolt up to the aftermarket headers that are already on my motor. I will probably take the headers off so i can install copper gaskets though and so I can change the EGR tube on the rear bank to be collected from the turbo down-pipe instead of the header. I used neverseize on the studs when I installed the headers so they will come right out.

I checked out those links. I love the vid where the max beats the 350Z. Did you see what wheels he was running? ;) smart dude. Light wheels are key.
The guy in the vid only ran a 14.5 though. thats 2 tenths slower than my last run. B)

Damn man. You need a mig asap.

KamberB - May 11, 2009 04:18 PM (GMT)

A mig would be nice. Can't afford one right now though. I got the stick welder for free.

Here's a couple more pics with the turbo mounted in the test car. This kind of gives you an idea of how the turbo will sit in the engine bay, although most of the front end has been removed for easy access.

If you wanna tack them in place for now. Do that and come up and use my mig. I know arc is a pita with thinner metals.

kendal_jones101 - May 12, 2009 04:16 AM (GMT)
an arc welder will blow holes right threw the piping if you look on craigslist you can find a mig or tig welder for under $300

Thanks. I might take you up on that. It's not as bad as you guys think though because the tubing is very thick, but yeah, a pain in the a$$ and very time consuming. Also I just taught myself how to weld a couple of weeks ago, so I'm learning as I go.

Lesson 1: Welding can give you a sun burn if you don't wear a full face mask :o

ProjectNissan6 - May 12, 2009 02:37 PM (GMT)
Your all very knowledgeable! my mechanic and I were talking about working on a 350z and he's afraid to touch it (as far as turbo Mods etc) I may have to see about you guys when it's time to start improving that car. LOL

That should be an easy one because you can buy a kit for the 350Z. I wouldn't mind working on that project. You should post some pics of the Z.

I used arc when I was at O&G doing heavy contruction.

BTW: I welded a ring to my finger one time. So no metal on the body either.

turboa32 - May 13, 2009 06:51 PM (GMT)
i think you should put that transmission back in

bryan163 - May 14, 2009 02:40 AM (GMT)
Here's a couple of pics from today. I started working on the piping to the rear bank. One pick is of a welded joint. not to bad considering im using a stick welder.

This is the manifold fully assembled, awaiting final welds. I'm debating weather or not to have it ceramic coated. I might just paint it with header paint to save money. Either way it will be wrapped in header wrap to maintain exhaust velocity and keep under hood temps down.

I had some time to work on the turbo project a little today. Here are a couple updates.

I welded the waste gate flange to a short piece of 1.5" pipe and then to the manifold just under the turbo flange.

I also relocated the battery to the trunk to make some room under the hood.

Yeah, I went to Surplus Unlimited in Norwich. A 25' roll was only $19.99. It's an awesome place to get cheap car audio supplies.

bryan163 - June 4, 2009 03:10 AM (GMT)
I threw the tranny back in last night to check for clearance. I put everythin back together and everything cleared :) Here's my Ebay waste gate. I'm still deciding if I wanna tie the waste gate back into the exhaust system or just let it rip from the down tube. Also I think I'm gonna have to custom make a 3" exhaust system. I don't think anyone sells a system sized for turbo applications for my car.

bryan163 - June 10, 2009 05:56 AM (GMT)
I got the fittings for the FMU today. The FMU (fuel management unit) Gets piped inline on the fuel return line and will raise fuel pressure as it senses boost to keep the motor from running lean. This will be replaced with a custom ECU and larger injectors in the near future so I can go higher with the boost without maxing out the duty cycle on the injectors and run more reasonable fuel pressure levels.

To save money I just painted the manifold with ceramic header paint instead of having them coated. Then I wrapped them with fiber glass header wrap to keep under hood temps down and exhaust velocity up.
