Title: Rough Start Up
alloutnissan - August 5, 2009 07:00 PM (GMT)
So lately my max has been starting up kind of rough, not TOO bad, but its starting to get more noticeable. It sounds like knocking on the start up when it revs up..and goes back down. Im thinking it might be the knock sensor? But also on start up the oil light flickers, dont know what thats about, what do you guys think?

Was the oil light flickering before you changed the oil pressure sending unit? You might have the same problem as Josh with that sound being a loose timing tensioner. Hopefully not due to low oil pressure.

Yes. It was flickering before i changed the oil pressure sending unit.

That light indicates the absence of oil pressure and the fact that you already replaced the sender confirms it. How long does the light stay on for?

a split second. itll flash REAL quick about 3 times and then go off. only on the startup. then again sometimes itll just flash once, but for a longer period of time than the flickering, and go off.

well, as long as the light is off you should be good. It might just be coming on because of the slow starts. Starters are problematic on 4th gens. Also the POS crank sensor on the flywheel side can cause hard starting. Sometimes you can just pull the sensor out and remove all the metal dust built up on the magnet and it will be good. It's located on the front of the trans right where the bell housing bolts to the motor. It's held in by one 10mm bolt. not to hard to check.

Hmmm..how long is this driveable on? Should I get this fixed soon?

I dont think it will hurt anything. Pop that sensor out and clean it though. It only takes a few minutes and it might solve both problems. You'll see what I mean about the metal dust when you take it out.
