Title: New Bloke needs Info
Description: Info idiot style
Kapitan - June 8, 2006 12:30 PM (GMT)
Hello chaps
I have just recently bought a copy of dawn of war, I am an ex tabletop player of 40K (all my opponents grew up or moved away, one even got a job with GM and doesn’t want to play 40K out side of work, understandable). I like the game and have had fun playing it and watching the thing that used to be inanimate characters moving around. But having been to several sights and I know I’m missing out on several aspects, multi gaming and mods. I play Combat Mission (CM) and am on the Blitz sight as a member and have several regular PBEM (play by E-mail) opponents, so am comfortable with some aspects of one line gaming.
I have down loaded the patch to upgrade my version to the latest 1.41 I think but I need to increase my partitions size to allow it to install, so I’m still running the original version that comes straight from the box. What I’m unsure of is the mods you seem to be talking about adds much more. There is talk of Fire dragons and map editors and other such stuff, none of which I see in the game. I have been pointed to the sight by Fubar (name dropping, I hope, ha ha ha, who I play CM games with) who has told me this is where to go.
I want to install the thing that are being talked about and have aspects of moding and upgrading explained. I’m not a computer moron but need all the information or I can’t understand it.
I’ll explain, it doesn’t matter if a world expert explained the respiratory system if I don’t know what oxygen is!
I know about skin mods but what also seems to be going on is improvements in the game- as in more of the elder aspects such as the fire dragons.
If someone could take the time to explain to me in uncluttered language and starting from the beginning. I would be most obliged, and then I can enjoy the game more and take a few of you on, hee hee. Explained in a way that avoids confusion, like talking to a child. Once I have assimilated the info, I assure you I can rapidly move into the most complex of concepts. I just need a slow start then I speed up rapidly.
Thanks a lot and hope to hear from you all.

The map editor can be downloaded from the 'net it doesn't come with the game. As for the Fire Dragons and such, they came with the expansion, Winter Assault.
The mod (DoW40K) can only run on Winter Assault, version 1.41. As for modding in general, go to www.relicnews.com and check around at the Adeptus Modificatus (DoW mods) section...
TBH, I'm at loss of what yer asking about, hope this help and see ya around

I'm afraid DoW40K runs only with the expansion pack, which I take it you do not have (you mention firedragons which are added in the exp not the mod). The mod also adds a whole bunch of cool stuff like Dire Avengers and SM veteran squads. It also brings it in line with the TT as far as possible.
Sounds to me like you need a new HDD I'm afraid, or free quite abit of space. They're not that expensive these days and I find having a large amount of space on a PC to be very useful.

Thank you for the response chaps, I’m sorry I did not reply to it earlier. I was having connection problems.
So from what you have said I should get the Winter Assault expansion pack and upgrade it to V 1.41. Will I need to have added the patches to the original DOW game, before I add the Winter Assault expansion or do all the patches come with it?
So once I have a DOW + Winter Assault expansion+ Upgrades (patches?) to 1.41.
Then I can run the DoW40K mod…………….ha ha ha, it better be worth it. But I really want to see Dire avenger running around and Striking scorpions, if they’re in it.
Out of interest how does it work and how was it created?
Is there any other add on that are deemed necessary for a better game. I saw a relic you can get rid of the squad and vehicle caps.
At what point can I start taking on people on line?

Once you have WA that should auto patch DoW to 1.4 then all you need is 1.41 I believe. It shouldn't hurt if DoW is already patched.
Dire avengers are in, but sadly not striking scorpions (we need the models and models are hard to come by).
THe mod was created by the astounding modding efforts of MirageKnight and a few others such as N0z3k1ill3r, check the readme for full credits. It's also massively bolstered by the modeling efforts of medes and a few others who do the Closer to Codex models.
Other downlads wise there are a few other mods, but none you can really run simultaneously with dow40K, and if you did do some coding to allow you to do this this would prevent you from playing online as everyone needs the same version. Hopefully though DoW40K provides all.

What type of models do you need?
I'm not bad at knocking out 3dmax stuff. If you give use some details of what you would need I can see if I can work something up. I on the dole at the moment so have a fair bit of spare time.
Plus I would love Striking scorpions.
So are the people creating DoW reprograming or just tweking stuff. I was looking through the program files on my harddrive and couldn't find anything that looked like it could be messed with. Such as skins or unit paramiters.

Yaaaaay!
We really, really, really need some inhouse modelers.
And true, a Striking Scorpion model would rock, but wouldn't a Swooping Hawk, Wraith Guards, Jetbikes or War Walkers be even more awesome?
PM Mirage, we'd love to welcome more custom models, and a modeler working solely for this mod would be great.

Forget what he said about Jetbikes though. Those don't look good in the engine.
Daton
Stim - June 19, 2006 12:08 PM (GMT)
DoW:#RO uses Jetbikes - and they're fine!
DatonKallandor - June 19, 2006 12:39 PM (GMT)
CC bikes look sucky. Period. All that stupid swiveling and the completely unsynced animations ruin it.
Daton
Stim - June 19, 2006 12:47 PM (GMT)
No CC for bikes? Hellfires and Sentinels without CC don't make your eyes bleed...
DatonKallandor - June 19, 2006 01:08 PM (GMT)
We already have a non-CC jetbike.
Daton
Stim - June 19, 2006 01:19 PM (GMT)
We're talking about group vehicles here...
Methuselath - June 19, 2006 01:23 PM (GMT)
NO! CC bikes, I beg off you... They just.... meh, anyway, Daton, you have my support!
Down to CC bikes, up with... anything else! <_<
Stim - June 19, 2006 01:24 PM (GMT)
Nobody is asking for CC, just more units.

Did someone mention they have modelling talent???
Looted Land Raider ftw!!!

Whooooa, slow down chaps.
I said I’m not bad with 3D max. I have never made a model for a game and am not sure how to produce it. I have been into the WOD prog and can’t find any skins or models so would need someone to explain some basics.
Would it need a skin or materials and textures embedded in the object, does it need a skeleton? Should it be of a specific size? Which method is the best way to make them? Do they have to be reduced to as few surfaces and objects as possible? Where are they in the game?
I’m an artist rather than a computer expert and can’t afford to go to Uni to get taught, so all I have done so far is self-taught on a ripped copy of max (v7). Give me some details and agree on a model and I’ll see what I can do.
I can’t say more than that.
I’m still for doing Striking scorpions as the Eldar suffered from the lack of heavy infantry. Though vehicles are easier to build.

No problem, I'm a self-taught PR guy meself, most of my experience are derived from yelling at the opposition during gang wars and screaming heretical controversies (I'm the devil's advocate) during religious debates
Personally, I find self-taught people have more creativity than the learned one, especially pertaining to the realm of arts.
Anyway, i'd recommend looking up at the
Adeptus Modificatus and the
Relic Developer's Network (needs a free registration) for more info.
Now, if you excuse me, I've got some screaming (now where's my bloody bat and staff combo?) to do. :ph43r:

If you download the larger version of the RDN tools for Winter Assault, then you'll get some example files as well, like working models for DoW etc.

Also, someone (Santos) developed a tool to extract models from the game, making life so much easier
