Just when you thought there has been an oversaturation of Nirvana re-releases, especially with the recent self-titled Nirvana album and With the Lights Out boxset. Well, there are reports that another compilation album is coming out shortly. This November 1, DGC, a Geffen Records subsidiary, will release a new Nirvana album titled Sliver: The Best of the Box. In summary this new album, is basically a "best of" the recent With the Lights Out box set that hit stores late last year.
However, not all your money is lost if you buy Sliver and already own the box set, as apparently there are 3 unreleased tracks to be featured on the album. It is anyone's guess what they tracks may be, some possibilities could include "Spank Thru", "Sappy", or "Opinion"*. There have been countless other songs availiable on bootlegs, so at this point in time, those are just some conjectures.
Perhaps, one of the more interesting notes about the upcoming release is that it will be designed and arranged by Courtney Love, with artwork by Francis Bean, Kurt and Courtney's daughter.
The tracklist has been confirmed as the following:
*Spank Thru - from 1985's "Fecal Matter" demo tape featuring Kurt Cobain on guitar and vocals with Dale Crover (of The Melvins) on bass and drums.
Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin cover recorded live at Nirvana's first performance (at a 1987 house party)
Mrs. Butterworth - undated rehearsal demo
Floyd The Barber - 1988 live recording
Clean Up Before She Comes - undated home demo
About A Girl - undated home demo
Blandest - 1988 studio recording
Ain't It A Shame - Leadbelly cover recorded in 1989 and featuring Mark Pickerel (of Screaming Trees) on drums.
*Sappy - 1990 studio recording
Opinion - 1990 solo acoustic radio performance
Lithium - 1990 solo acoustic radio performance
Sliver - undated home demo
Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991 pre-Nevermind rehearsal recording
*Come As You Are - 1991 pre-Nevermind rehearsal recording
Old Age - 1991 Nevermind outtake
Oh The Guilt - from 1992 Touch and Go split-single with The Jesus Lizard
Rape Me - 1992 acoustic home demo
Rape Me - 1992 electric studio recording
Heart Shaped Box - 1993 Rio de Janeiro studio recording
Do Re Mi - 1994 home demo
You Know You're Right - 1994 home demo
All Apologies - 1994 home demo Well this looks like it's gonna end up on my wishlist, I bought the previous Box Set "With the lights Out" and I've gotta say that Nirvana does everything but dissapoint. Evertything that Kurt Cobain touched turned to gold, hopefully this will not be any different. Rating Prediction:
*4.5/5
