Title: Best Of 2007

Decay - April 25, 2008 02:17 PM (GMT)
Ok It might be a bit late but I was wondering what some of your favourite albums of 2007 were. For me it would go something like this;

Reverend Bizarre - III: So Long Suckers: The third and final album by Doom Metal Goliaths Reverend Bizarre, the aptly titled album features some of RB's heaviest and longest songs and is the perfect swansong from these doom fellows.

Anubis Gate - Andromeda Unchained: After two excessively average albums it was to be the third album by Prog Metal band Anubis Gate that put them on the map as being serious contenders.

Evile - Enter the Grave: Woah, what a kickass debut. This stuff absolutely kills and shows that Thrash is not dead. If this does not get your head banging consider yourself not metal.

Nile - Ithyphallic: These guys have yet to make a bad album as far as I'm concerned. Say what you will but Nile is still one of the few Death Metal bands that are doing anything interesting.

Swallow the Sun - Hope: Despite their gay name Swallow the Sun are actually not a metalcore band but rather a blend of Doom and Death. I tend to stay away from Death/Doom bands because its usually Death Metal with some badly done Doom influence and vice-versa but StS do it very well and I found this album on repeat quite a lot. Also don't be fooled by the title, this album will give you anything but Hope. A must 'check-out'.

Alchemist - Tripsis: It rules just like everything else they've released. Why Alchemist are not headlining festivals and on the cover of Metal mags worldwide still continues to be a mystery.

Severe Torture - Sworn Vengeance: Originally starting out as a Cannibal Corpse Brutal Death clone, these guys have really shown some huge progression over the years and Sworn Vengeance is proof of that. They still have that old sound of theirs but have shaken it up by taking influence from Pestilence and Decapitated and forming themselves into a more Tech Death band. I can't wait for what these guys will do next album.

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient: Final album by Heavy Devy and unlike SYL's last album it didn't suck. Ziltoid is a (parody) concept album about an alien that comes to earth, gets a bad coffee and wages war on Earth. Only the man himself could think that up let alone make a decent album out of it.

Mortal Sin - An Absence of Faith: This went relatively unnoticed by most Metal fans out there except for the devoted few Thrash fanatics among us. Oh well, sucks for them because this shit is awesome old school Thrash done right by Aussie Legends, Mortal Sin.

Sodom - The Final Sign of Evil: Re-recording's always make people feel nervous. They rarely work and even when they do it still reeks of a cash-in. The same anxiety was felt with Sodom's Re-recording of their hugely influential 1984 ep In the Sign of Evil. Silly me for ever doubting them, with the original lineup of Angelripper (Vocals/Bass), Witchhunter (Drums) and Violator (Guitars) this just slayed, sounding as vicious and raw as it was back in 84'. So manly that in their spare time they wrestle sharks and kick old people..

As with every year there were some disappointments.

Pagan's Mind - God's Equation: They had yet to make a bad album....and now they have.

Vital Remains - Icons of Evil: Not a bad album but no where near the might of Dechristinize. Expected more.

Annihilator - Metal: Would Annihilator please fuck off and retire already. Just when you think Jeff Waters can't go any lower he pulls out the Jackhammer and keeps digging.

Angelcorpse - Of Lucifer and Lightning: The reformation and announced album of Angelcorpse had many a metalhead frothing at the mouth, that is until they heard it. Painfully average.
