Here it is. The book that makes me read it over and over again and brings a tear to my eye. Gates of Fire.
The story of 300 Spartans (okay it was a little bit more than that but 300 was the amount o the last day) taking on the Might of the persian Empire.
SPARTAN 300Shot on green screen. LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!! I don't care about the story line that Holywood inserts into it. As it's about how 300 men sold their lives for time. Enough time for the Greek Cities to gather a force to face the Persians. It's a story of how 300 men inspired fear in an army of millions. It's about how the Spartans took every insult in their stride and laughed about it ("It is said the persian army has enough archers to blot out the sun with their arrows", "Then we shall fight in the shade!"). It's about how a small well trained army with discipline will slow down and stop a vast army as long as they use terrain tactics and tehir strengths.
It's a story of madness, or how a King of Sparta asks for volunteers who all know they will die.
