Hawaii football defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville is the leading candidate to be the new head coach at Portland State, a source close to the PSU program said today.

Glanville said he will go to Oregon on Sunday and interview with Portland State officials Monday and Tuesday. PSU officials have said they want to have a new coach in place by the end of next week. Tim Walsh, the Vikings coach the past 14 years, resigned two weeks ago to become offensive coordinator at Army.

Glanville declined further comment, other than to say Portland State would be releasing the fact that he is among the candidates,

“Any announcements should come from the school,” Glanville said. “I don’t want to mess up anything for them.”

Glanville also declined to comment on reports that current UH assistant Mouse Davis would be his offensive coordinator at Portland State. Davis, 74, is a PSU legend, setting offensive records as head coach there in the 1970s and '80s with the run-and-shoot offense.

Davis, who has said 2006 would be his last season at UH, was not immediately available for comment. His contract at UH ends next month.

Glanville, 65, former NFL head coach of the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons, joined the Hawaii staff in 2005 a the request of UH head coach June Jones. Jones was an assistant to Glanville at both Houston and Atlanta.

Jones played quarterback at Portland State, after transferring there from UH.
