Drake hires ex-Cyclone Loney as interim football coach

Drake has hired Steve Loney as interim football coach of the Bulldogs, with plans to officially introduce Loney during a 2:30 p.m. news conference today on campus.

Loney, the former Iowa State assistant coach and Marshalltown native, most recently served as offensive line coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals last season.

Details such as how Loney’s interim status will be defined, and how the process for the permanent coach will be handled were not immediately known.

This will be the second time Loney has been a college head coach. He led Morehead State from 1981-83.

Loney’s youngest daughter, Kylan, played college basketball at Arizona State at the same time Drake University athletic director Sandy Hatfield Clubb was an assistant athletic director at that university.

Loney takes over for Rob Ash, who coached Drake for 18 years before being named coach of Montana State on June 11.

He also has coached on the NFL staff of the Minnesota Vikings.
