EA announces ‘Family Play’ for Wii

EA are one of the biggest supporters of the Wii system. Not only have they given the system a number of franchise titles, but the overall quality of EA games on the system has been very good indeed. Now, they’re taking the Wii experience to a ‘new level’ with Family Play. Basically: gaming for idiots.

The idea is to make playing games fun for everyone, regardless of ability. Think of it as the equivalent of that person who was always really good at Smash Bros even though all they ever did was blindly mash buttons. Debuting on the Wii versions of Madden NFL 08, NBA LIVE 08 and FIFA 08, Family Play is a new way to play that enables players of all abilities to play with their friends and family without a competitive disadvantage. Experienced players can use the more advanced controls, but with the simplified version of the game included as an option, the playing field is levelled.

This is (basically) how it works:

“EA SPORTS Family Play on the Wii creates an incredibly accessible and user-friendly experience that the whole family will enjoy,” said Dave McCarthy, Executive Producer for the three games developed at EA Canada. “While many fans love to control every piece of the action, novice players can have just as much fun jumping in to throw a touchdown pass, nail a three pointer or take a shot on goal. Family Play brings together fans of all ages to enjoy playing EA SPORTS games, and even let’s them ease in to Advanced play if they desire.”

A clever ploy by EA and one that will hopefully ensure that everyone in the family can enjoy these games on the Wii. Let us know your thoughts by commenting below.
