The Georgia Force is expected to announce Wednesday that it is moving back to Gwinnett after three seasons at Philips Arena. The Force will hold a news conference at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Gwinnett Arena, arena general manager Preston Williams confirmed Tuesday.
After playing its inaugural 2002 season at Philips, the Force moved to the 11,200-seat Gwinnett Arena in Duluth when it opened in February 2003. The team played there two seasons.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank, shortly after buying the Force in the summer of 2004, took the team back downtown. The team signed a three-year lease with Philips.
And now the team is apparently coming back to Gwinnett. Philips Arena spokesman Tom Hughes confirmed Tuesday that the Force is not returning to Philips.
Many fans believe Arena football is better suited to a smaller arena. The Force averaged about 12,600 fans per game in 2005 and 2006, but attendance fell to 11,489 last season despite the team's 15-3 record.
That kind of crowd would provide a raucous atmosphere in Gwinnett, but only filled Philips to two-thirds capacity.
