BAD AXE, Mich. - A lucky couple expecting to cash in their winning Michigan Lottery ticket became a bit peeved when a store clerk turned down their request.
Bad Axe gas station and convenience store owner Eli Kabban said the man and woman showed up Wednesday morning with what they thought was a $150 winning ticket they'd bought Friday.
They complained when the clerk told them they would have to collect their winnings in Lansing, the state capital, 150 miles away.
Kabban said he took the couple into his office and explained the ticket was actually worth $250,000. He says they were "in shock" at the news.
The couple asked that their names not be released, but Kabban told radio station WLEW-FM that they are getting financial advice on how to handle their windfall
At least the store owner was honest.
A guy was in our shop a few months ago talking about a QuickPic ticket he had bought when the jackpot went over 100 mill.
He had the ticket clipped to his sunvisor in his truck and had never checked the numbers. He stopped by a c-store to grab a drink and saw the ticket as he got out of the truck, so he took it in to be checked by the 'puter.
Got his soft drink and walked up to the counter, the clerk scanned the ticket and said "No luck this time" and threw the ticket in a trash can behind him. (No one else was at the store at this time.)
He paid for his drink and as he was leaving he looked back at the store front.
The clerk had a ticket in his hand and was smiling.
As he drove off it stuck him as being kind of odd, so he turned around and went back and asked for his ticket from the trash. Clerk made some excuse about he wouldn't know which ticket it was and the guy said its the one with my initails in the corner.
The clerk resisted, but the guy managed to get his ticket back.
He then went to another store and asked for a print out of that drawing's winning numbers.
Turns out he won something like 5 or 10K.
