A Second World War Royal Navy destroyer has been discovered in a Norwegian fjord, 68 years after it sank during the Battle of Narvik. A Norwegian mine control vessel found the HMS Hunter at a depth of 305m during a training exercise.

HMS Hunter was a 1,880 tonne H-Class Destroyer which lost 110 of its 145 crew during the battle on 10 April 1940. The Hunter was one of two Allied destroyers lost during the battle, which also saw the loss of four German destroyers.

Despite several attempts to find the wreck over many years, its location remained a mystery until this year. A Norwegian mine hunter echosounder pinpointed the sunken vessel while on an exercise with the Royal Navy, Royal Norwegian Navy and Royal Netherlands Navy.

The Ministry of Defence has now marked the wreck site as a war grave.
