By JAMEY KEATEN PARIS (AP) - Pirates seized control of a French cruise ship Friday off the coast of Somalia, France's Foreign Ministry said.
A ministry official said details about the attack were scarce, and it was not clear how many crew members were on board the ship or if there were any passengers.
The ship is in the high seas in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean.
The official declined to identify the vessel or its owner.
The ministry has set up a crisis center to deal with the situation, said the official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Pirates seized more than two dozen ships off the Somali coast last year.
The U.S. Navy has led international patrols to try to combat piracy in the region. Last year, the guided missile destroyer USS Porter opened fire to destroy pirate skiffs tied to a Japanese tanker.
Wracked by more than a decade of violence and anarchy, Somalia does not have its own navy and a transitional government formed in 2004 with U.N. help has struggled to assert control.
The International Maritime Bureau, which tracks piracy, said in its annual report earlier this year that global pirate attacks rose by 10 percent in 2007, marking the first increase in three years.

I say we go bail them out so they can be rude to us in restaurants and criticize our foreign policy!
Wait......

I doubt the pirates actually "seized" the ship...that implies there might have been some form of resistance. More likely they got onboard, and the crew immediately dropped down and began begging for mercy... 8DRTV75

Dang, and to think I lent my Ninja-boat out this weekend.
Besides, I read in another article there is an AMERICAN (for Tigger)warship already enroute to intercept. If the navy can't get 'er done, they can call me.

Whatever.
The French have no moral right to question our foreign policy, because it it wasn't for us, they'd be speaking German and cooking Jews. So while you may have the moral right to look down your nose at us (even though you are wrong), they do not.
Tigger - April 6, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
So you think American foreign policy lately has been stellar?
So you're saying that the US saved the French which is technically wrong btw, they have no right to criticize your foreign policy now.

As to the former, no I do not, and you may attempt to cite where I said so if you wish (good luck with that).
As to the latter, that is exactly what I am saying, in an oversimplified way. It is also that we bailed their asses out in WWII, and yet ever since then they have a haughty attitude toward anything we do in the public arena. It is not "lately," it has been a consistent crappy attitude on their part.
Should've let their sorry asses remain under Nazi rule.
And while we're at it, they're one of the very few nations in history that is absolutely stupid enough to VOLUNTARILY elect communist members to its government. Not that they would have put up any resistance to armed revolution mind you, but to just roll over and take it?
Sharp ones, the French!

I may be misunderstanding this, but why is Tigger, a Canadian, arguing in defense of France for hating on our foreign policy? If anything, Canada should be a better friend of the US than France. After all, we've exported 1000s of jobs to them for their citizens to work.
Tigger - April 6, 2008 02:16 AM (GMT)
I'm not defending the French, actually I'm not too fond of them myself.
...and I hope when you use "we" you mean the allies saved there ass. You do know that Canada was at war with Germany two years prior the US getting involved right?
Further more didn't they help you guys gain your independence?
As for your comment about electing Communist members into there Parliament, I'm not aware of this but I'm guessing it's the way there system of government is set up, an independent can be elected as member of Parliament and doesn't have to a member of the two major parties like in the States. For instance we have a pot party up here, the leader could get elected in his district if he has enough votes.

Yes, they helped us gain our independence. You didn't hear us going about trash-mouthing them in the world after that, either, did you?
And yes, the allies saved the French, but while Canada was "at war with Germany two years prior to the US getting involved," it was our troops who formed the tip of the spear at Normandy, so yes, WE shed American blood on their shores and in the process turned the tide of the entire war.
That is NOT to diminish the efforts of the other allies, so for example, I wouldn't just point that out to you, a Canadian, but I will gladly point it out to some smart-ass French twit spouting off about America's place in the world and how we should follow their lead.

Fair enough, but don't you think prior to the Iraq war pouring french wine in the gutter and changing french fries to freedom fries was pretty stupid?
Any nation has the right to criticize another nations actions. We did it when you guys went to Vietnam and Iraq, it doesn't mean we are less of an Allie, I rather have a friend give me his honest opinion on something then one that always agrees with me.

How does their right to criticize us somehow make our demonstrative criticism of them "stupid?"
Do they have the right to say what they want and we must remain silent?
That's the problem with the whole "right to criticize" argument. It always argues for a one-way right, usually in the direction of whoever agrees with you.
Note that I didn't say the French don't have the RIGHT to criticize us. I said they don't have the MORAL STANDING to criticize us.
And I have every right to say that. I prefer it to pouring wine in the gutter and changing the names of food, but I do have to confess that I find it amusing that we didn't do anything to the "French Dip" sandwich :D

I never ordered freedom fries, and wasting alcohol is blasphemy, so it wasn't my thing. But I will defend to the death any American's right to demonstrate w/out persecution. Many Americans also criticized our actions on going to war w/Iraq. I did not agree w/them at the time, but always respected their right to their opinion. Turns out many of them may have had much more foresight than I did. I tend to trust/believe our leaders first, and then criticize later. May not be a good thing, but my Uncle made a career in the military (retired AF now) and he kind of used to talk to us about how it's ok to disagree w/the commander in chief, but also to respect that he is the commander. (if that makes any sense)
What would we have called the French Dip sandwich anyway? Or for that matter, French kissing? Thailand Tongue kissing? I dunno... just throwing something out there...

Are you serious????
First off get your facts straight, The US had NO INTENTION of entering WW2, to save anybody ass, The American public was dead set against going to war. FDR tried everything possible to help the Allies during that period , lean lease ring a bell?
Thank God Japan attack Pearl Harbor and american public opinion changed declaring War on Japan and thank God Germany then declared war on the US because there was a debate in the US if you guys would declare war on Germany. Germany gave you the answer when they declared war on the US.
So don't give this bullshit that the US ''saved'' France because of morality or whatever. The US got into the war because they where attacked and war was declared against them.
France like any other country has the right to criticize anybody else's foreign policy, and maybe if the Bush administration would of listen you guys wouldn't be in the mess that is called Iraq, and let's not forget the 4000 American deaths, over 30K wounded and over 100K Iraqie deaths !!!!!

We weren't attacked by Germany.
And I'm not talking about morality or anything else with regard to our motives. I'm talking about the morality of watching our soldiers die on your shores to free your sorry asses and then having the absolute gall to criticize our country at every opportunity ever since. The fact that we were freeing their sorry asses out of our own self-interest has no bearing on the issue whatsoever. The point is that without our intervention, the French would be drinking better beer as we speak.
Again, they have the right to criticize whoever they want. And I have the right to call them chickenshit weak-kneed assholes for doing it.
It really is that simple, isn't it?
