Title: Will Bob Barr Run As The Libertarian Candidate?
Description: Will You vote for him?
HolyMoses - April 5, 2008 04:15 AM (GMT)
Oh Hell. That isn't working. Just explain how his running will influence your vote. You know!
HolyMoses - April 5, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
If he runs . . . and I think he will. It would be INCREDIBLE for Obama. It would put MANY southern states in play.
Alfred E. Neuman - April 5, 2008 04:31 AM (GMT)
I'm pretty certain he's running. He won't say whether he's talked to Ron Paul or not.
My ultimate ticket would be a Paul/Barr Libertarian ticket. I'd pull a hamstring running to the polls to vote for them. Barr by himself would still probably get my vote, because McCain just doesn't so anything for me.
Just about the only thing that could sway me toward McCain would be an airtight energy policy with specific detail and goals to get us self sufficient.
But Barr running will definately narrow the gap for Obama in places like GA and AL. Real conservatives have been abandoned by the Republicans, but they still vote Republican in the south. Give them a candidate they know with real conservative values and they might think about jumping ship. He could pull enough votes from McCain to make it interesting.

At this point I do not think it will matter much..GOP members are still gonna pull the lever for McCain like good sheep..

Do you have any idea how crazy it makes me that you and JDaveG won't vote for Democratic Presidents!!!!!!
Would you look at the freakin' Supreme COURT!!!!!!!!
Vote Conservative/Libertarian EVERYWHERE else and let the hamstrung Democratic President appoint Justices who will protect individual civil liberty.
Republican Legislature with a Democratic President and Liberal Judicuary is the best deal Libertarians can meaningfully hope for.
But a vote for Barr would be fine with me. (By YOU. I'm votin' Obama, of course.)
BTW . . on the last political quiz, I was SMACK dab on the moderate line for fiscal ideology. VERY liberal socially.

I know that my vote for President is statistically insignificant, so I'll always vote with my ideology. Especially in states like Georgia or Washington where the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Just like Atlanta isn't nearly enough Democrat votes to outweigh the rest of the state voting Republican, Spokane isn't near enough Republican votes to coutneract everyone west of the Cascades voting Democrat.
If I was in Ohio or some other state that could be decided by a couple thousand votes I might think differently.
Partly, I think it's also a "whose ox is getting gored" situation. No infringements of liberty have directly affected me, so I've had no reason to rebel to a more liberal postion. As liberal as I am in my social ideology, I'm pretty conservative in my personal life.
HolyMoses - April 5, 2008 05:06 AM (GMT)
I appreciate the frankness of the "ox being gored" point. Dissapointed, but appreciative!
There is more to the Presidential Campaign than your vote. You can be an advocate for the type of system that best suits your libertarian views.
You would be a hell of a lot more pursuasive to libertarians as an advocate for Obama, or anyone running against someone who PROMISES to appoint "Alito/Roberts" type Justices than I am.
There is little doubt that another Republican President will result in a shift in the Court to a majority that adopts a radically different view of Separation of Church and State than anything we have seen in a hundred years. They will reject O'Connor's "endorsement" threshold and adopt the "coercement" standard. In other words, it would be fine for the government to endorse religoun, just not coerce it.
And that would only be the beginning.
Are you a Libertarian or a Federalist? Is it ok to deprive someone of civil liberties so long as it is at the state level? There is only one Document that defends the freedom of individual Americans. I want Justices who expand the meaning of that document as much as possible.
Can you imagine A supreme Court of Alito, Roberts, Thomas, Scalia and "Alito/Roberts"?
How long do you think Stevens and Ginsburg are going to be around? Who do you want replacing them?
Who's going to be looking out for you when it's your stinkin' Ox?
HolyMoses - April 5, 2008 05:13 AM (GMT)
Woa!!!!!! After that last post, I had sort of forgotten what this thread was about.
And then it hit me . . . . That might be EXACTLY why Barr is running.
Think about it? He has become much for outspoken as a defender of individual freedom since he left office.
The best thing he could possibly do to protect individual liberty is help Obama get elected.

I'm definately a true libertarian. Like you said, only one document lays out the freedoms that we as Americans are guaranteed.
I'm libertarian to the point that I think NO personal liberties should be infringed upon so long as the exercise of those liberties doesn't infringe on someone else's ability to exercise their liberty. That's why Ron Paul is perhaps the best candidate I've ever seen run.
Your point is well taken on the "Alito/Roberts" apointments that McCain is promissing. I also think he's just blowing smoke up the extreme right's ass to get votes.
I didn't make the "ox being gored" comment to illustrate any well thought out voting plan I've used. It's just a possible expalnation for why I haven't been forced to actively campaign against the right to this point. But I always default to the side of liberty, every time. That's why I'm so anti-Bush now. We've been screwed into bad wars before, and they suck. But trying to pass an anti gay marriage ammendment, warrantless wire taps, abusing habeas corpus - those things should damn near cause a revolution.

He'll be the proverbial fly in the ointment to the Republicans for this election. 8DRTV75

Which also might have something to do with Barr running. The expansion of Executive Power has been obscene.
Remember when people with the "If you're not outraged, you haven't been paying attention" bumper stickers were extremists?

My (least) favorite bit of Executive Expansion legislation is the bill that damn near gives the president dictatorial powers in the case of a national emergency.
Of course, just what exactly a national emergency entails wasn't even attempted to be defined.
And who decides what exactly IS a national emergency? The Decider.

The most glorious marriage in Hell will be the joinder in eternal matrimony between George W. Bush and John Woo.
oh . . . . that was pretty good, wasn't it?

If Barr runs, he would likely get my vote.
I voted for Michael Badnarik in 2004 and actively campaigned for Ron Paul this cycle.
IMO, a vote for McCain = a vote for Bush.. an unacceptable option.
Unless you happen to like unending interventionist war for the corporate empire, lessening of personal liberty and economic freedom for the working class.
A vote for Obama is = to a vote for Hillary, that`s also an unacceptable option.
Unless you happen to like wealth redistribution on a larger scale, an even bigger federal government and more losses in personal liberty and economic freedom.
