Title: Need some ideas for my garden this year
Iowahorse - April 10, 2008 08:43 PM (GMT)
Ok, I'm putting in three types of heirloom tomatoes, Hot peppers, (Habanero, jalapeņo and Thai Dragons) bell peppers and cow horn peppers and sweet corn. Some radishes, green onion, leaf lettuce,(for Dutch Mess) kohlrabi and okra. And I'm thinking green beans or wax beans, just ain't decided which yet, maybe both. And no pumpkins.
I don't like cukes, squash or most melons,..watermelon is good, but I've not had a lot of luck growing them, as the soil needs to be sandier and better drained than what I have. I also have rhubarb, raspberry and strawberry patches near my garden along my fence, but those grow every year, no matter what. Taters are so cheap I can buy them with less hassle, altho I used to grow them.
I'll still have some space left
Ideas?

Corn is easy to grow and fresh corn is good for grilling.

Try some Carolina Classic Peas, Bush and/or Contender beans, Butter peas, colored butter beans (small variety), Crowder peas, there's a new variety of colored butter peas, I put those as exceptional, great taste and texture, and even though you don't like squash, try some zucchini. The stuff is awesome grilled.
Kale, cabbages, red and white,.
Got some pepper seed I need to send your way. But IF you plant them, don't bitch at me when you "attempt" to eat them. Mexicans won't even touch these things and I have seen them make a grown man cry, literally!!!!!!
Hell just call me, it's easier that way.

I hate you. My new place is on the backside of a hill. That plus a ton of trees which look pretty but shade too much for a garden.

Butter beans, carrots, and my favorite bell peppers, which you may have already said.
Flight58 - April 11, 2008 12:59 AM (GMT)
Broccoli, Cauliflower, Bressel sprouts, lima beans, and green beans.

To be honest, it's not so much MY property as it is my parents, but dad don't garden like he used to so over the last few years I've taken it over. Just a drive across town for me. Small price to pay for fresh homegrown goodies.

Yeah I'm contemplating on the beans, carrots tho,..for some odd reason, only grow well sporadically in my garden no matter what I try. I can't quite tell if the seeds I get or what. Radishes once in a while do the same thing as carrots, just grow to tops and that's it. I think it may be the seeds because other years they grow great.

I don't think it's the seeds as much as the soil and lack of nutrients( the carrots.)
I have a hard time with lettuce and it's grown all over here. You should try a soil test for growing carrots, it shouldn't cost much, through your ag extentsion office.

I've done a soil test, 2 years ago as a matter of fact, it was fine except needing a bit of nitrogen which we did, and I rotate the planting areas every year. I'm going to still say it's the seeds because I buy them off of ebay, so you never really know for sure. And those are the only two things I've had problems growing that I should not have. That ground is rich tho,..dad used to raise rabbits and all the poop went to it, so did the dead rabbits and all pets are buried deep in that mess. Funny how things grow well over dead stuff....

Hell Ton was in disbelief that I can grow okra here,..but I do, and well, also. He thought it was a southern thing, and it is, but because of soil, but because of tatse. I am the ONLY person I know around here that grows and likes it.
Well, ok...even grows it.

Carrots are picky bastards to grow. Looking at or for a soil pH of around 6.5 and low nitrogen content and avoid high nitrogen fertilizers. High Nitrogen levels will make the carrots "split" into multiple roots instead of singles.
But carrots strive on potassium. They love the stuff. Well drained soil too. You can grow them raised beds with little effort.
Gotta be careful too of cross-pollination. They can and will cross-pollinate with carrots over 1/4 mile away.
Something I didn't think about earlier is "window ledge" or "back porch" herbs. The legal kind of course. Parsley, cilantro, etc. Use the flats that you normally start your peppers and such in.

Already do that, I made some grow boxes out of odds and ends about 6 years ago,..always use 'em.

Do you think that garlic is a possibility? Never planted it myself, so I am not sure how to grow it. If I still had time for a garden I would find out if I could grow it. Mincing your own garlic is much better than the store bought kind.

Not sure about any suggestions on what to grow, but I know where you can send some fresh okra when it comes in! :)
