Title: I think our worst fears are going to come true
Description: Jake Long and Dorsey off the board at #3
keithbrooking56 - April 11, 2008 07:54 PM (GMT)
There are multiple reports that the Dolphins seem to be zeroing in on Jake Long and the Rams have zeroed in on Dorsey as they have Jake Long #1 on their draft board but they believe the Dolphins will take him.
This puts us at a horrible spot IMO. We absolutely should not take Matt Ryan that high. I do not see any team desperate to trade up to take McFadden at #3. Who would we take at #3 if we can not trade down?

If Jake Long goes at #1 and Dorsey goes at #2 and we can't trade down then...
!ff/:

No, we would notbe in a horrible spot nor is it my worst fear.
We would still be in shape to select the top QB or the number two O or D lineman in the draft.
That`s still a strong drafting position and we have options with our 2nd and 3rd round picks.
Forget trading down, nobody is willing to move up.
We can still assure ourselfs of at least 2 blue chipper on day one if Dimitroff plays his crads right no matter what anyone in front of us does.

You truly think Matt Ryan is worth the money it will take to sign him as the #3 pick and the first quarterback taken in the draft?

Matt Ryan will be the next...Joey Harrington.
Harrington had decent stats and was known for his comebacks in college just like Ryan.

Probably not but it would not be the worst thing to happen to the club since Vicks indictment for dog fighting either.
It`s been said in this forum (and I agree) that, this years draft is not going to be made or called a bust based on the selection of one player.
It also seems to me, many are ready to call the draft a bust if we don`t get that one player they have their hearts set upon.
BTW, SB.
It`s way too early to lable Matt Ryan the next Joey Harrington.
I think he will go one to have a nice NFL career, if the Falcons select him or not?

People said the same thing about Joey Heisman.

People say all kinds of things but I did`t say it.
Let me explain something about QB `s and drafting QB`s in general.
It`s very difficult to consistently win in the NFL without a competent signal caller.
He not only has to have all the physical tools but intelligence, confidence, a big desire to win and find a way to earn the confidence from his team and coaching staff.
For what ever reasons Harrington has never had any confidence.
Matt Ryan already has equal or better physical skills and he is way ahead of Joey in the confidence department.
Some are also calling Ryan a bigger stronger Drew Brees.
About drafting QB`s.
It`s important to select a guy who has the correct mental makeup to go in addition to his physical tools.
Matt has them both, that is why he is projected as the top of his class.
Plus, it`s a statistical fact......
QB`s taken in the 1st round have a 50% success rate in the NFL.
Hell yeah, it`s a crap shoot but its a higher odds crap shoot than taking a QB in the later rounds as QB`s selected in the 2nd round, their success rate drops to only 10% and way down hill after that.
I know, people will point to Tom Brady taken in the 6th and Joe Montanna taken in the 3rd but those guys are extreme exceptions and few have been that lucky.

im not 100% sure that jake long will go to MIA. he is just in contract talks and all that means is that if they were to draft him they would be able to sign him right then and there and they wouldnt have to go through a holdout. IF j.long and dorsey are off the board by the time we pick and we cannot trade down i would be happy if we picked sed ellis since we wouldnt really have another choice. taking ellis would still be filling a need and i was really impressed from what i have seen from him.
if smith and TD pick matt, i'll be ok with it because that means they really have faith in the guy and think that he can be productive in our system. i would just hope that he can come out onto the field and play great for us.

You should read more of Joey Harrington's pre-draft talk. You might find it surprising... A lot of it sounds remarkably like Matt Ryan. Guess where Harrington was drafted?
Round: 1 / Pick: 3
Hmm, exactly the pick we have... The Lions also had O-line and defensive needs when they drafted Harrington just like we do now.
Also check out Harrington's pre-draft report:
| QUOTE |
Strengths: Excellent footwork and deceptive speed make Joey Harrington very elusive (he was sacked only four times last year). He can throw the deep ball, play the underneath game, and improvise outside the pocket.
Teammates simply love Harrington because of his leadership skills and competitiveness. He's also extremely smart, and has said in interviews that law would be his calling were it not for football. A clutch performer, Harrington's 14-2 as a starter prior to this year and has engineered numerous come-from-behind victories...
Areas of concern: ... of course, the flip-side to comebacks is that a team has to be down first, and Harrington's done his fair share to bury the Ducks early. He's thrown 17 interceptions the past two years, including five last season against arch-rival Oregon State, costing the Ducks a trip to the Rose Bowl. Link

That sounds remarkably like Matt Ryan doesn't it...
Matt Ryan could be Joey Harrington Jr.
