A young Reuters cameraman in Gaza filmed an Israeli tank as it fired the shell which killed him.

And it emerged that 23-year-old Fadel Shana had survived a similar incident two years ago, when his car was hit by a missile from an Israeli aircraft.

Shana was travelling yesterday in an SUV marked "TV" when he was felled in the blast, initially described by locals as an Israeli air strike.

He had been getting out of the vehicle when the shell hit, also killing two bystanders, Reuters said.

Shana had worked for Reuters in Gaza for more than three years, the agency said in a statement.

He was also wounded in August 2006 when an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at the vehicle he was travelling in.

He was "a gentle soul, happy and extremely bright, and one of the most skilled cameramen in Gaza who will be missed greatly by all his colleagues", said Alastair Macdonald, bureau chief for Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Shana was unmarried, and a very popular figure among the 15-person Reuters news team in the Gaza Strip, the agency said.

"Our thoughts are with his family," said Reuters editor-in-chief David Schlesinger. "We request an immediate investigation into the incident by the Israeli defence forces.

"This tragic incident shows the risks journalists take every day to report the news. All governments and organisations have a responsibility to take the utmost care to protect professionals trying to do their jobs."

The vehicle Shana was travelling in was an unarmoured sport utility vehicle bearing "TV" and "Press" markings, Reuters said. The blast, on a country back road, left the car shattered and ablaze.

Shana's body armour was partially torn off.

Hundreds of journalists and well-wishers flocked to the hospital where Shana's body was taken. The family plan to hold a funeral on Thursday.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 685 journalists have been killed reporting in conflict zones since 1992.

The organisation counts journalists who were "killed in direct reprisal for his or her work, in crossfire, or while carrying out a dangerous assignment''.

The International Federation of Journalists said 172 journalists were killed last year in the course of their work. About 50 of these were accidents involving transport, natural disasters or medical problems triggered by the nature of a journalist's assignment.

RAMALLAH, April 17, 2008, (WAFA)-The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the Israeli assassination of the journalist and Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana'a during his professional national duty.

In a statement, the Syndicate affirmed that the Israeli perfidious bombing targeted Shana'a's car although the press mark was very clear on the car.

The Syndicate called on the international community and all those concerned with the protection and defense of human rights and media to intervene and protect Palestinian journalists.
