Title: Damn...just damn...
Description: Had to do something awful today..

Ton80kid - April 18, 2008 03:11 PM (GMT)
Had to put one of our cats down. He's been getting more and more feral the last few years, and the vet said he was slipping into a form of feline dementia. With the upcoming move and all of the turmoil that's going to create, we were really left with no choice. We couldn't give him away because he had so many problems, and even if we could find someone willing to take a sick cat who just happens to be mental, than we couldn't trust that this person wouldn't eventually lose their patience for him, and begin torturing or abusing it. It was simply unfair to try and move him with us, because the move would, more than likely, further screw him up.

In the end, putting him down was the last option left for us....we took him to the vet this morning. Said our goodbyes. Then watched as they, first, sedated him, and then put him down. The look in his eyes wasn't this calm, peaceful acceptance. He was miserable. I'm pretty sure this is going to haunt me for awhile...and who knows, I probably deserve it. :(

I've had some bad luck with cats this year. We had to put our 11 year old cat down because she had diabetes and we didn't even know it. Her blood basically turned into poison and wrecked her organs.

We just lost our 12 year old cat for 2 weeks because we were babysitting my mom's dogs and he got scared and ran away. We just got him back a few days ago. Yay!

At least you did the right thing. Too many people now days would just dump their pet on the side of the road and say to hell with it. You can sleep with a clean conscience (sp)....

Ton, I am so, so sorry. You do NOT deserve to feel bad over this. You didn't have an acceptable alternative. Making an animal that ill adjust to a new environment, or new family would have been cruel. Better he spent his last moments with the people who loved him.

I'm very sorry to hear about that. It's not an easy decision to make, but it sounds like you were thinking of the best interest of your pet.

Hang in there bud, it'll get better. Had to put my dog down last year. Had him for 16 years and that was one of the hardest things I've ever done. He was like one of my family. Yup, I did shed a few tears when I buried him. But the memories will last forever.

That sucks dude. Just know that you did the humane thing for your cat.

Thanks everyone...I appreciate that. We're struggling a bit, because he's been with us for 11 years. His sister, from the same litter, is wandering around here lost, as are the our other cats...I think they'll eventually settle down...leastways, I hope...I would never compare this to losing a child, parent, loved one, etc, and I've had pets die in the past, when I was younger, but this is the first one that I've ever had to make this decision on...I really do appreciate everyting y'all have said here...it's helped more than you might realize...we're trying to stay busy, cleaning the house, doing yard work, and gearing up for our big ass Moving/Yard Sale tomorrow morning....it's making it easier.

It's hard to watch your pets grieve; his sister will get better eventually. When our nine-year-old cat, Xavier, died last year, his brother (same mother) wandered around the house looking lost for about two months. He would sit at the bottom of Xavier's chair and meow and stare. That was February 2007, and while he is a happy cat again, he occasionally will sit in that spot, meow and stare.

Again, Ton, I truly hope you know that you made the right decision. {Hug} for you and your family.

Sorry for your loss Mr. 80. I had to do the same thing for a cat I'd had about 14-15 yrs. back in 05. It's tough stuff, for sure. My cat had been my sister's cat for the first yr. or 2 of her life. Then my sister died in an accident and I took her in. She was the only pet I had during that time, and a great companion. (although, she was a little weird in the head, too... like a typical cat, if there is such a thing.) My vets office was so understanding & compassionate & that made it a lot easier. I'll admit I cried when he put the needle in her, but you know on some level that it is the only right & merciful thing to do. She is buried under a stone marker in the woods behind my last house.
Now we have 2 dogs & a cat. And man, one of my dogs... it's a sin how much I love that dog. Can't imagine that day comin' for him; it's going to be brutal.

Btw, you did the right thing for your pet. But if you ever run into a similar situation, where you (or anyone you know) really needs a cat rescue, I know of a great one. They have sheltered & adopted out many Feline HIV+ cats, and they're really caring & do great work rescuing felines (& some dogs).

Sorry about that, Steve. Losing pets always plucks a particular heartstring that seems to be wound tighter than the others. Nothing nice about it.

Sorry to hear that, Ton80. About 2 years ago, we had to put a dog down that we got literally a few months after we got married. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

Ton sorry to hear about your cat. It's hard to think about the life ahead without something you've grown to love and accept especially with the many years bond you've had. I have a dog that got hit by a car and the vet said we need too put him down, I just couldn't do it. Now I see him hobbling around like he wished he didn't make it. He walks down the steps with a grimace every step he makes and I wished I would had put him down many times seeing all the pain he goes through, but now that he's still living I can't bring myself to do it. I know it was a hard choice, but it was the best choice for the cat.

Thanks again everyone...your words have helped me more than I can say... :)
