| FWIW, I'm familiar with that "Time of Grace" guy. He's actually a pastor in our Synod. He's also, from everything I've seen about him, a grade-A neo-Protestant CGM "Church of What's Happenin' Now" guy. Having said all that (and leaving no doubt that I do not share this guy's theology at all), I WILL say that we are called as Christians to obey civil authorities except where those civil authorities call on us to disobey God. Also, the "slavery" argument is a bit of a slander. The slavery dealt with in Scripture was typically far different than American slavery, much less brutal and dehumanizing, and typically brought about because of war or debt. Having said THAT, our "freedom" in Christ does not argue that we should accept martial law or tyranny. Martial law would actually be a violation of American principles of government, so we would NOT be obeying the proper authorities if we accepted that. We'd be obeying scofflaws and tyrants. Still, make no mistake - that was a hit piece. I don't like that Pastor's theology one bit. I wouldn't be a member of his church. But his words were placed in a "worst construction" propaganda. That's not fair to him or those of us who share communion with him. |
