McShay Scouting Report: Jake Long
The Miami Dolphins have reached a contract agreement with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and will select him with the No. 1 overall pick in Saturday's draft, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
The announcement will come at a 1:45 p.m. ET news conference.
Despite speculation that Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells really had planned to select Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston or Virginia defensive end Chris Long, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith that since the Dolphins opened negotiations with Jake Long they were talking to him exclusively.
Long, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound senior who moved to left tackle in 2006 and started his final 26 games, was an All-America selection and Big Ten lineman of the year in each of his last two seasons.
Offensive line is considered the biggest need for the Dolphins, who went 1-15 last year.

Man, I'll be happy w/either one. Ellis or Dorsey. I got to see Dorsey play a little more often this year, but Ellis was a flat out monster in the Sr. Bowl. I don't know that I agree w/trading down though, unless we're somehow sure if Dorsey is gone, that we would still be able to get Ellis. Now, I know that sounds like I'm saying he's worth the 3rd pick. I don't necessarily agree w/that, but I don't want to break my TV either.

Sucks to be Jake Long. I hope he gets a lot of money. Dolphins aren't going anywhere.

If we don't get Jake Long or Dorsey, what about Chris Long? I think he's going to be a helluva player for some lucky team. I'd be happy w/him or Ellis if J. Long & Dorsey are somehow both off the board.
BlackTalon - April 22, 2008 07:29 PM (GMT)
Good for Jake..he`s #1
Dorsey is very likely a Ram.
Some might as well get over it.
Matt Ryan (as I have been saying) likely a Falcon.
Learn it, accept it, might as well find a way to like it. :)

And btw, I am not going to REALLY break my TV if they pick Ryan. It is a position of need, and I trust Dimi/Smith to know better what they need than me. I think he'll end up doing well in the NFL if he gets the right coaches & the right opportunities. May take a while, but I'll live w/it.
I'd rather see us pick up Brohm or Flacco in later rounds. But that's just me.

Honestly, at this point I'd rather trade down even if Dorsey is on the board. There's hardly any difference, in my opinion, between Dorsey and Ellis. If we move down, we get more compensation, an equal talent, and less of an injury risk. No brainer in my opinion.
Of course, then you say, what if both are gone? Then Albert, McKelvin, Clady, or Williams.

I agree, Dorsey is likely a Ram.
However, this is not Fantasy football where your top 2 guys are gone and you`r sitting at number 3 and say ''Lets trade down 6 slots and get the guy that is 2nd best at one of those positions.''
The talent is so close and deep in this draft that it makes trading down from our slot difficult.
Nobody is going to want to give much to trade up into our position.
So, IMO the best strategy is to go ahead a select the best QB in the draft (Matt Ryan) and then trade back up into lower to mid 1st round using our leverage with the multiple 2nd a 3rd rounders to land a top shelf O-lineman if we trade at all?
That way we wind up with two 1st round picks filling areas of dire need with blue chip talent and still have picks in the 2nd and 3rd to find more players that can possibly contribute.

I`m not saying give up the farm to move back up into the 1st.
Just offer up a 2nd and a 3rd to move up 10 to 15 slots.
Me thinking is, all the best O-linemen will be gone by the end of the 1st round, as many as 6 or 7 will be taken in the 1st.
I want one that`s going to be in the starting line up in September and have used our strong draft position to have secured our future QB.
This is not going to be a one draft fix and many have seriously understimated how dire we are in need at the QB position.
