Garnett tabbed NBA's best defender
New York, NY (Sports Network) - The NBA announced Tuesday that the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett has won the 2007-08 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.
The 6-foot-11 forward averaged 9.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 1.4 steals while chipping in 14.8 points per game for Boston, which ranked second in the league in points allowed (90.3 ppg). The defensive award is the first of his career for the 31-year-old.
Garnett, acquired in a highly-touted 7-for-1 deal in the offseason with Minnesota, led the Celtics to the NBA's best record (66-16) and the biggest one-year turnaround in NBA history as the Celtics won 42 more games than their 2006-07 campaign (24-58).
The "Big Ticket" received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes, from a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Last season's winner, Denver's Marcus Camby, finished second in the voting with 178 points, while Houston's Shane Battier placed third with 175 points.
