But,..I guess that's not as bad as KC for me. Seems that when I go there, no matter where I wanna get to I end up in Kansas City KS by the railways, old stockyards and shitsville urban barrios.

That's where that big ass arch is right? You gotta go up in that at least. :)

St. Louis is great. I try to get back there once a month. Which part will you be in? If you like Italian food, ask your concierge for directions to The Hill. Then pick any restaurant. They're all phenomenal. Also, Forest Park is nice - beautiful park, art museum, outdoor theater, history musuem, etc. Not too far from the city is Augusta/Defiance, which has a terrific wine trail.
I can't believe any of you think traffic in STL is worse than Atlanta. iy88767
As far as East St. Louis, it isn't as bad as it used to be. I used to go to there in the evenings occasionally for work and never had a problem...as opposed to Clayton (way nicer area), where I had two uncomfortable incidents. Sauget, IL, is much worse than East St. Louis.

i'm up here working now as i type. we were in downtown st. louis working. our office building we did all the troubleshooting and splicing is one block from busch stadium and i've had to worked under and around and beside the arch, the rams dome, the blues dome, union station, and so on. the city was pretty easy to figure out. its all one way streets, i only went down a few of them wrong.
we're staying in alton across the river in illinois, i hate the drive.
and just about an hour ago, my damn ac compressor went out in my truck so i get to drive 13 hours home with no ac. then i'm going to my boss and have him fix or get me a work truck.

Yeah, the drive from Illinois into the city is definitely awful. I was downtown St. Louis a month or so ago, and believe it or not, it's actually a little better than it used to be. Schlafly's is a good microbrewery, and they have great sandwiches. It's in the loft district, just off of Washington.
For Illinois, the river road in Graffton is cool if you like to jog or bike (assuming you have time while you're there). There are a couple of wineries there, too. If you like cheap beer and shrimp with the locals, Fast Eddie's is a good dive bar. If you take 367 to work, you should see it as you come back into Alton, coming off the Clark bridge. I wish I could help you more with Alton specifically, but I usually only go there for Josephine's Tea Room. The city is supposed to have several haunted buildings, if you're into that. Here's the city's general site, if you're interested:

your better off seeing if your job can transfer you to chicago rather than st. louis, that place is a dump and filled w/ angry selfish cardinal fans.
