Title: Have a great weekend...
Description: We're off to go scout new homes...

Ton80kid - April 25, 2008 06:35 PM (GMT)
It's official...I'm retired...for at least a few weeks...after that, the wife is probably gonna kick my ass everyday until I get un-retired.

Y'all have a great weekend, and try not to kill each other while I'm gone. I'll be back in a few days...

You know it's bad when you start thinking about how much it would cost just to leave everything and buy all new stuff.

I was seriously thinking about that the last time I moved.

I did as well the last time I moved and to keep me from changing my mind, I set all my shit on fire and burned that mo fo to the ground. Too bad my wife was still in there, or was it? :)

Are you moving houses or moving towns?

Both. But they don't live in a trailer that they're moving, if that's what you meant. Ton's b'day thread will clear it up for ya. :)

Well...we're back...significantly lighter in the pocket. We've plunked down our money, set up our utilities, and set up the new bank accounts, as our bank doesn't have a local branch in our soon to be new home town. Twas a tough trip...and one with filled with more than a little anxiety. I've lived in other places of the country for short periods...Seattle, NYC, ATL, St. Louis, and a few other spots off the beaten path...but I've never relocated, in what has to be considered a permanent move, from Middle GA. The thought hit me while I was on the way the way there last weekend, that this is HUGE...I don't have a lot of close friends that I'm neccesarily leaving behind here in GA, but nearly all of my family is here...just as all of the wife's family is in Kentucky. So in essence, while she's getting to return to hers, I'm leaving mine. I have memories associated with nearly every part of Middle GA, and now, I'll be moving to a town where I don't have any memories to associate with new surroundings. Let me tell you...that last thought nearly floored me...if felt like the weight of the world just got dropped square on my chest. I had a hard time breathing, and my vision began to swirl a bit...eventually, I came out of it, but that moment did force me to re-evaluate my original assesment of this move. I thought it was going to be a breeze...I mean, I thought moving 9 hours away from everything/everyone I've ever known, wouldn't be a big deal. Now I know otherwise...

This move is still going to happen, and I'm still very eager and stoked to make the move...but now I do realize that it's not going to be without some form of trepidation and anxiety. The change of scenery will be a wonderful thing...but I'll have to be careful not to let it overwhelm me again...

Anyways...thanks for showing an interest you knuckleheads... 8DRTV75 678hnn77

That same stuff smacked me square in the face a few months ago. It's tough leaving what you've known all your life with no intention of ever going back. My biggest fear was that there was NO support network for us here. Our closest family member is 3000 miles away.

Ya, you still got all your loser Intraweb budz, mon. 7urjj

When ya feel like it, let us know where you ended up. I know there was debate between a ranch and a commercial property. Just curious how that turned out for ya.

Btw, even if you're only moving across town, moving is just as stressful as divorce or death, so I feel ya man. Big step, but ya made it!! :)

Iowahorse - April 30, 2008 01:59 AM (GMT)
I've moved several times, all over the country, (and other countries, not so willingly) and been divorced. I'll take the moving any day of the week and twice on sundays.

Ton80kid - April 30, 2008 02:22 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys...we looked at several properties, but just couldn't settle on one that we felt like buying...so we decided to sign a lease on a house down the street from her mom's for a year or two, while we secure the financing to buy a few acres outside of town, and build us something. I found a commercial building to rezone, but that trend hasn't quite reached the boonies of Bluegrass yet, so getting the rezoning permits were going to be quite expensive and time consuming. Who knows...maybe somewhere down the road we can try that...it's definitely something I'm very interested in trying. For the time being, we'll just focus on what we're doing now with the rental, and trying to build something a year or two from now. Property value up there is unbelievable. It's horse country, and property there is extremely inflated...the house we're selling here for $105K would be worth $350K there...it's absolutely unreal.

As for my friends on the 'net...trust me, y'all are damn near family...some of you are closer to me than some of my family...like I told Mrs. Ton80, I couldn't do this move at all, if I couldn't stay in touch with y'all here... :)

Yeah that cost of living thing seems to go way up when you get in real desirable places to live. We're leasing now, too, but we had a house that we bought in Powder Springs GA (NW of Atlanta) that we bought for 152K, probably would have been worth about 200K in a non-depressed market when we sold it. (or I should say if we COULD have sold it before it was foreclosed on) That same style house was going for about 350K up in Asheville, NC where I'm from. It's insane. The cost of living up there was considerably higher on everything, but especially real estate. And the really f'd up thing for us, is that the salaries do not seem comparitive to the cost of living. I don't know how people do it. There's definitely not as many jobs up there. Not that that's a concern for you now, ya bastige. nr6

Oh...don't let me BS ya...I'm not really retired for good...I get about a month or so being unemployed, and then it's right back to work again. I'm trying to land a job with the state courts, as a researcher, and then I might even think about going to night classes, or taking some internet courses towards a law degree...ultimately though, I'm just hoping to get far enough ahead in life so I can truly retire and play professional poker for the rest of my days... :)

I've lived that nightmare for 21 years Ton. I moved to NC from Macon when I got married. I have lots of friends here, a good job, respectable standing in the community ... but I won't kid you..I miss the red earth of Tara. Especially in the last year or so. When my Dad went through lung cancer surgery and chemo last year I spent more time there. I reconnected with some old friends and ever since, I just want to go home. We go to church where my husband grew up - his HS buddies are there, his former teachers and football coach, the senior citizens who were so much a part of his young life. I never get to see the folks who spaped my life.

I know that doesn't help you but maybe you can feel good for your wife - that she is going home for a change. My husband would never move to Macon for me or any other reason - she's lucky to have you.
