Some of his sermons were taken horribly out of context. That's absolutely true.
But remember that most Americans (especially hard-core partisans) don't bother with intellectual burdens such as subtlety and nuance. They just blindly regurgitate whatever they are spoonfed by their party leaders.
The American government allows the killing of millions of innocent unborn children every year. Should we say that God has blessed America for allowing this slaughter? Are evangelicals proud of America's abortion laws? Or should evangelical Christians say that God will damn and punish America for allowing these atrocities?
How is that different from what Rev. Wright said?
Wright's point about Martin Luther King's anti-Vietnam and poverty-relief message was fantastic. It's ironic, but I view Rev. Wright as being one of the few people today who has preached the full, unabridged version of Rev. King's theology.
People want to sanitize King's message and filter it down just to Civil Rights, ignoring his often radical (at the time) sermons against economic inequality and the SPIRITUALLY corrosive effects of poverty.
They assasinated Wright's character and by default are assasinating Obama's as well. It's truly a damn shame.
