Can't live with them, can't flourish without them.
What's the special occasion?

I hate that kind of shit.

You shoulda lived near a feaking NASCAR track. hundreds of thousands of drunk idiots swarming like locusts 2 weekends a year. The track was 20 miles north of my house and it would still fuck up traffic for the whole weekend.

At least it's only a three day festival. The small little town of Brevard, NC where I live is a cluster fuck throughout the whole summer from terrorists.....er I mean tourists. People have to see the frickin waterfalls. The damn forestry service now charges for stuff that used to be free. We have a place called sliding rock, which is a great place to get your ass torn up if you don't know which part to slide down that we always enjoyed going to during those hot summer days. Now because of all the toursts, they charge to go down it. Same damn thing with the Cradle of Forestry which holds a lot of history and still has the original cabins from when it was a camp for training soldiers. Used to be free as well.

I live close to this place called Heritage Landing where they have summer carnivals and concerts and festivals.

Only cool one is Biker Days which is a weekend motorcycle rally. Lame ones are the Unity concerts (flock of flipping Christians) and the Irish Music Festival (frickin' gay).

I was surprised to read Iowa gets tourists.

You've got to be kidding me. Has it gotten that bad? I can remember when Sliding Rock was "crowded" maybe, but they never used to charge to go to that park. I haven't thought about that in years, so thanks for bringing back the good memories. *sigh* Those were the good ole days. Load up the car w/your best girlfriends in bathing suits on a hot summer day & go splash around in the cold river. And even charging for the Cradle of Forestry now too, huh? That blows. How much is it to get in the park(s) now, and is it extra to go down Sliding Rock? I'm trying to remember the correct path down the rock. Seems like there is a fairly deep pool to the left (if you're looking down the rock) and that's where you were supposed to end up. But yeah, I've busted my ass a few times out there in the shallow part.
Some other places we used to go & hang out: anywhere on the Blue Ridge Pkwy, including Craggy Gardens, Graveyard Fields & Pisgah National Forest. Bent Creek, Lake Lure, Joyce Kilmer National Forest... used to all be beautiful & mostly pristine. The last time I was at Pisgah, a beetle infestation had destroyed a good bit of the forest up there. It was pretty creeping looking to see all the dead trees everywhere.
