Title: Germ Factories
Description: Does Beer Kill Streph?

falconfoozball - May 9, 2008 01:54 AM (GMT)
My son came home from school w/streph throat last week, and I had to stay out of work 2 days w/him, my wife, one day.

We loaded up on vitamins, and since she has a not-so-great immune system, she even took some antibiotics for preventative measures. So he's back in school this whole week, neither of us got sick, and we're thinking we dodged a bullet. But last night she came home & said the same kind of bug was going around her office. Then the guy that works for me comes in today, after being scheduled off the last couple of days, and says he was sick one of the days and didn't feel good this morning (stomach stuff and fever). And now my wife just comes in the room w/a thermometer to show me she's got a fever of 103. Usually this is just cause she's Hot Blooded, so I offered to "check it and see" but apparently... she's not in the mood.

Anyway, like some other posters on this board, I also have a mild insomnia that I choose to treat w/meds... which I've been out of for about a week. So, I've been drinking a little more than usual, 2-3 beers at night just to relax and help me get to sleep. So far, I feel fine. Which brings me to my original question:

Does beer kill streph?

Not the worst. You're probably the best smartass friend I know. :D

Now I gotta go back & look at that thread... it did sound like something I'd say, though. fgtb76

The Claim: A Little Alcohol Can Help You Beat a Cold

Times Health Guide: The Common Cold

When it comes to quick remedies for colds, many people insist that a glass of brandy or a hot toddy — whiskey with hot water and lemon juice — is just what the doctor ordered.

It’s not difficult to see how mild inebriation might have the potential to relieve cold and flu symptoms, but so far no study has shown that alcohol has the ability to kill germs in the bloodstream or stop a cold in its tracks. And while alcohol may provide temporary relief, it can prolong symptoms by increasing dehydration.

Nonetheless, two large studies have found that although moderate drinking will not cure colds, it can help keep them at bay. One, by researchers at Carnegie Mellon in 1993, looked at 391 adults and found that resistance to colds increased with moderate drinking, except in smokers.

Then, in 2002, researchers in Spain followed 4,300 healthy adults, examining their habits and susceptibility to colds. The study, in The American Journal of Epidemiology, found no relationship between the incidence of colds and consumption of beer, spirits, Vitamin C or zinc. But drinking 8 to 14 glasses of wine per week, particularly red wine, was linked to as much as a 60 percent reduction in the risk of developing a cold. The scientists suspected this had something to do with the antioxidant properties of wine.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Alcohol will not help cure a cold, though moderate consumption may reduce susceptibility.

Need to boost my Immune system now, got a double birthday party this weekend. Plus some of the little bastards are spending the night. Every virus known to Western Civilization will be here in 36 hours. I wonder if I could get off wearing a mask and gloves?

Well, I'm a smoker too, so not sure I'm going to see any of those possible benefits. I rarely drink to excess though, at least anymore. It's rare we have the opportunity to. And even then, I'm kind of a lightweight.

You knew exactly what I meant by "germ factories" though, didn't you? :D We only have the 1 kid, but even though he's pretty healthy, he likes to wrestle and hug & all that... always seems to be bringing crap home from school. And even though I kind of understand the reasoning, I hate it when people get sick and bring their contagious asses to work & spread that stuff around. I'm willing to bet my wife got this from her co-workers over our son. All I know is they better not say crap to her about being out. Her boss is one of the people who was sick & coming to work anyway.

Hey, you could wear a bee keepers suit and the kids would probably think it was cool. 3452jjj

I don't know how you get off (drum roll bang) nr6
Fooz I have found it's 90% mental. Take this from a man that is the only working person in a family of four, I can't afford to be sick. Like Rob posted dehydration is of the most concern. I drink plenty of water during my day and I make myself contiune to work even when I feel bad.

Ill be manning the flaming grill, so the germs will have to leap thru fire to get me. And I just shocked the pool, so the Chlorine will burn a few layers of bugs away.

Early that evening, I shall be retiring to the man cave and boltin the door.

Sounds like good times. Still it's kinda slack of you not to just let 'em have the party on the yacht.
