Texans will have No. 1 pick in 2006 draft
The Houston Texans never got out of last place in the NFL and finished there Sunday, securing the first pick in the NFL draft and possibly the rights to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush.
Houston lost 20-17 in overtime to San Francisco, and that gave the Texans (2-14) the chance to take USC's Bush, assuming he decides to declare for the draft after the top-ranked Trojans play No. 2 Texas in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday night.
Bush has a year of college eligibility remaining.
New Orleans (3-13) has the second pick and will be followed by Tennessee, the New York Jets and Green Bay (all 4-12). Two other 4-12 teams, San Francisco and Oakland, will pick sixth and seventh, but the order was to be determined by Sunday night's game between St. Louis and Dallas because the tiebreakers involve games played by those two teams.
The NFL will announce those picks and the rest of the draft order on Monday.
Three head coaches on their way out
Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil, 69, retired after a 37-3 win over Cincinnati. The Chiefs went 10-6 this season, but fell short of the playoffs. Vermeil finished 120-109 for a .524 winning percentage, and led the Rams to a 2000 Super Bowl victory.
The Vikings fired coach Mike Tice after they beat Chicago 34-10. He finished his four seasons with a 32-32 record, but this season was marred by a wild boat party during the team's bye week this season that produced misdemeanor charges against four players.
Dom Capers will be fired Monday by the Houston Texans, a person close to the team told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. Capers, the only coach in the Texans' four-year existence, saw his team slip from seven wins in 2004 to two wins this season.
Alexander, Rackers set scoring records
Shaun Alexander, Seahawks, set the NFL mark for touchdowns in a season with 28. He broke Priest Holmes' mark of 27 set in 2003 with a 1-yard run, the 100th touchdown of his career.
Alexander also won the league rushing title with 1,880 yards.
Arizona's Neil Rackers broke the NFL's single-season field goal record by hitting a 42-yarder at Indianapolis, his 40th field goal this season. He tied the mark with a 28-yarder earlier, and finished the season 40-for-42.
Matt Stover's 21-yard field goal in the first quarter for Baltimore gave him 1,587 points, moving him into eighth place on the NFL's career scoring list ahead of Al Del Greco.
I think that they will draft Reggie Bush and trade him for D'Brickashaw Ferguson and a 2nd round pick.
Yeah, I don't think Houston will want to keep him, but they know how valuable he'll be to other teams. Houston could really benefit from some OL players.
