'Taiwan independence' bid to bring disaster: China
Beijing, March 1 (PTI): Reaffirming its resolve to crush "Taiwan independence" in any form, China on Tuesday warned 23 million Taiwanese people on the cash-rich island that their "selfish" President was inviting a "nightmare" or a "disaster" upon them.
"We resolutely oppose 'Taiwan independence' and will never allow 'Taiwan independence' secessionist forces to secede Taiwan from the motherland under any name or by any means," the Chinese Government and the ruling Communist Party of China said in a joint statement.
Reacting sharply to Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's decision to scrap a policy-making body on unification with China and 15-year-old symbolic guidelines on eventual unification of the mainland with Taiwan, the statement said Chen's move would only bring disaster to the Taiwan society.
"Chen Shui-bian has obstinately promoted radical 'Taiwan independence' line and stirred up all-round confrontation and conflict within Taiwan and across the Taiwan Straits. It will only bring disaster to the Taiwan society," the joint statement issued by the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the Chinese cabinet said.
It is apparent he has selfishly attempted to impose the nightmare of "Taiwan independence" advocated by a few people on the 23 million Taiwan people, yet he calls it "respects the free choice of Taiwan people," the statement said.
"Taiwan independence" runs counter to the mainstream of Chinese history and current trends of development and it goes against the will and aspiration of the 1.3 billion Chinese people," the statement said, stressing: "It is doomed to fail."
