Title: Katrina
Description: and my sister

HueroFeo - August 29, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
She is stationed at Biloxi AFB, and had to get into a bunker with her students last night. Since than, no one has heard from them. That bunker was rated for a class 3, but when Katrina went over, it was still a class 4. And, her house in Ocean Springs, MS was situated at 7 feet above sea level, and parts of Ocean Springs was 25 feet under water...All we know is that her husband was able to get the kids to Columbus, MS and they are safe. So, if your a praying type, please do.

yeah, me too. When I get to work tomorrow, I will try to get ahold of her using the military phone system (good thing I work for the Marines, eh?). Hopefully, they will be restored by than.

I got a call from my mom during practice tonight...they finally got ahold of her, and everyone in her bunker is having to share a phone (so the call was only for a couple of minutes), but she is doing ok, and they are told to expect some Marines tomorrow morning with some fresh water and MRE's. But, they are told to expect to stay in the bunker for another day or two due to the flooding.
Thanks everyone!

shay - August 30, 2005 11:38 AM (GMT)
Glad to hear they survived. Bet they all will be ready for a hot shower and hot meals when they come out of that bunker.

Glad that they made it through..but I've got to admit, when you talked about the "bunker" all I could think about was that scene in Grease in the bomb shelter..."Let's do it for our country...the red, the white, and the blue..." /b6

I am really troubled by this entire thing...I'm a South Florida girl originally and I know the fear and anxiety that comes along knowing something that huge that Mother Nature produced is coming your way. I've witnessed my family boarding up our house, and have been through several evacuations...Since moving up to North GA, I've had the threat and fear of tornados, and watched the aftermath after a tornado ripped through my highschool my senior year...I've helped people try to salvage some of their things after their homes were ripped to shreds, and helped them clean their yards, and visit their hurt loved ones in the hospital. A tornado touched down very close to here night before last, while I was sleeping. I woke up to find out Lindsay had no school because they were wanting to keep the children home to make sure everyone was accounted for. A local town, Helen, very cute Alpine themed town about 5 mins down the road from me had 20% of their city destroyed via tornado...2 weeks before Oktoberfest (an event very important to the local businesses here)....This hellacious storm has left its mark...and it continues on...and my heart is so very heavy right now...for the people that witnessed this...the children...their mental state...the people who have lost everything...their homes, their towns, the business that cut their paychecks...their lives...And I feel for the men and women that are out today trying to restore some sort of civility down there...it's hot, humid, muggy, and emotionally devastating to put it lightly...

Heuro, I'm glad your sister is ok...very glad...

And my prayers go out to every single person effected by this storm...it's going to be a long, hard, emotionally draining road to recovery for so many...God be with them...

I was talking to my Dad last nighth, he was supposed to be moving some tanks down in Camp Shelby, MS. He couldn't make it down there due to Katrina. The National Guard called him and asked if he could coordinate the relief supplies in the railyard. Of course he said he would. He was telling me about the conversation he had with the Sgt. down there and they were going door to door looking for survivors. They have found alot of dead people. They can't take them out of the houses just yet because it would slow the recovery effort. They are going through and marking each house with dead in them with red "X"'s. Truley a sad and disheartening event. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone down there right now.

Weather service says Helen twister among strongest
by The Associated Press

PEACHTREE CITY - The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday that Hurricane Katrina's remnants spawned nine tornadoes that swept through Georgia on Monday, killing two people, toppling trees and leveling buildings.

The strongest of the storms hit Carroll County in west Georgia, where two died, and north Georgia's White County, said meteorologist Eric Avila. He said two tornadoes actually ripped through White County, where vicious winds tore the second story off a motel in the tourist town of Helen.

The storms brought less than two inches to the state, not matching the more than eight inches of rain that Hurricane Dennis dumped over some Georgia cities in July.

The Weather Service also confirmed tornadoes in the following locations: Haralson County, one mile southwest of the community of Felton; Polk County, two miles east of Cedartown; Spalding County; Peach County near the city of Fort Valley; Barrow County at Fort Yargo State Park and Social Circle in southern Walton County.

Strong winds, and possibly a tornado, also hit Lula, in eastern Hall County, toppling hundreds of trees and damaged 18 houses.

(AccessNorthGa.com's Ken Stanford contributed to this report.)

some new word...FEMA called my sisters hubby and told him to start filling some paperwork out for emergency assistance, as well as some other forms...basically, they lost their house. But, in the end, that isnt too bad because everyone (at least in my family) survived, and they were able to get some pics and other important documents out before they had to evacuate.
My heart still goes out to all those that lost anything, especially life.

I have heard that they are having a shark infestation though. Sharks and snakes are the biggest dangers now. Little fish feed on the dead bodies, and sharks feed on the little fish...too bad the sharks dont start feeding on all them gutless assholes that are looting! I can understand if they are trying to get food to survive, but thats it...no tv's, stereo's, etc
