The Break-Up couple Jen’n’Vince give Buzz their relationships advice…
What was like doing The Break-Up while breaking up with Brad?
Jen Well, yeah. I thought it was a joke when I got the phone call from my agent. You have to be kidding me! But it was definitely therapeutic. I always feel there’s no better way to heal than through laughter.
Have you ever resorted to games to ditch the other person?
Jen Oh God, do I want to go down that road? [ Laughs ] That memory lane? I don’t, you know.
Go on, you must have played one or two…
Jen You know, one of the great games that you play is you don’t call back as quickly. You sort of just pretend that you’re not interested. That’s one of the basic ones.
How about you, Vince? What are your break-up tricks?
Vince Well, there’s two categories: the best way and the easiest way. [ Laughs ] If you’re dating someone for a couple of months, you just don’t call. I would leave town for a while, then when I ran into them I could make like, ‘Oh, I went home…I don’t know what happened. We lost contact. It’s good to see you. How are you doing?’
So what came first: the casting or your relationship?
Jen Oh, I wouldn’t know how to answer that question. No, I’m not going to! You can ask Vince that one…
Vince?
Vince I never approach that stuff that way. I just kind of go with the right person at the right moment and you sort of feel it. We wrote the movie after I finished Mr & Mrs Smith and wrote it for about six months. I never had a game plan.
What do you think of Vince?
Jen He’s just the cream of the crop in terms of male comedians and also an amazing dramatic actor. I always loved watching him as an actor.
Even now he’s fat?
Vince Are you saying that Jennifer looked better? No, I’ll tell you what happened. I quit smoking when we were shooting and I was eating constantly. I’m not that big of an exercise person anyway, so being the genius that I am, I quit smoking and put on 25lbs for a romantic comedy. Then when the movie ended, I started smoking again. Thankfully, it falls under the guise of ‘character choice’!
